COMBINATION LIP AND HANDLE ASSEMBLY FOR CONTAINERS Fild Nov. 3, 1944 MORTON WADDDA.
INVENTOR' BY WJQJ "96v- ATTORNEY.
Patented Feb. 25, 1947 UNITED STATES PATENT orrlcs COMBINATION LIP AND HANDLE ASSEMBLY FOR CONTAINERS Morton waaaeu,nm en',N n p I D I I H Application November 3, 1944,8erial No. 561,761,-- v
handle assembly for use'on paint cans, and other containers of similar nature. i Paint and similar products are usually dispensed in pint and quart cans for domestic use and the majority of users apply the paint directly from, the cans. It is the usual experience when paint is taken directly from a can onto the brush, that it has a tendency to overflow the narrow rim forming the top of the standard canand to drip down the sides onto whatever surface the can may be resting. Such paint marks are difficult to remove, are easily tracked from place to place, and in one way or another the hands of the operator soon become smeared with paint because of unavoidable contact with the sides of the can. The results are loss of the paint material and damage to surfaces and hands.
With the foregoing in mind it is the object of the present invention to provide a detachable lip and handle assembly which is applicable to practically any can in which paints and similar products are sold, and which provides an extension lip fitting tightly and snugly under the top flange of the can to prevent the contents from spilling over and down the sides during the process of taking up the paint by means of a brush or while mixing the contents as is so often necessary to bring it to the proper consistency.
A further object of the invention is to aiiord a detachable lip and handle assembly for a container of the character described, which may be constructed from a single piece of material such for example as metal or plastic and which as a consequence is an inexpensive accessory applicable to any can with a minimum of eifort.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a detachable lip for a paint can against which the brush may be wiped to remove surplus paint and to return the same to the interior of the can.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by means of a detachable lip and handle construction consisting of certain novel combinations and arrangements of parts, hereinafter described, set forth in the appended claims, and illustratively exemplified in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the lip and handle as it appears before being attached to a paint can. 1
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the detachable lip and handle as applied to a can.
Figure 3 is a substantially longitudinal sectional This invention relates to a detachable lip and I Referring to the detachable lip and handle assembly comprises preferably a single piece of material cutfa'nd formed to provide a hand portion Ill, adapted to surround the body of the can A just under the upper edge, and provided with an outwardly turned tab l lat one end and a handle shaped portion l2 at'the other end. The tab H and handle I2 adjacent their inner ends are provided with openings l3 and I4 respectively, which are alined when the band I0 is in place about the can, and which receive a bolt l5 adapted to draw the two ends of the band towards each other by means of a thumb nut 16 on the bolt l5.
The material of the band I0 is extended above the upper side thereof to form an outwardly flared lip H, the end adjacent the handle portion 12 being turned inwardly on itself to form a short channel or groove [8 into which the upper edge of an extension l9, at the other end of the lip is adapted to seat when the band is applied.
The detachable lip and handle is applied to a can simply by placing the open band l0 about the body of the can just under the upper edge thereof. The bolt l5, carried by the handle por-. I
tion [2, is inserted through the opening l3, in the tab I I and the thumb nut l6 tighten to bring the ends of the band together so that the latter tightly embraces the sides of the can. As the band 10 is closed the extension I 9 enters the groove l8 to form the lip l1 into a continuous outwardly flared flange which opens into the opening in the head of the can. In order to insure a more complete connection between the detachable lip and the can, the material at the line between the band it! and the lip I! is formed into a lateral ridge or seat 20 adapted to fit snugly over the corner of the can top.
It will be understood that to remove the detachable unit the thumb nut I6 is loosened to allow the band to expand to a point where the band may be lifted from the can.
As explained earlier, the lipll provides a means to cause the surplus paint from a brush, when wiped against the lip, to return to the interior of the can instead of overflowing and running down the sides of the container, thus avoiding paint marks wherever the can is placed and preventing the hands and clothes coming in contact with the can from being soiled.
When the paint job is complete and the container is to be closed, the groove in the head of the container is cleaned and the lid inserted. Under ordinary conditions, the paint which has accumulated in the groove during use, will spirt outwardly as the lid is driven home, with a result that the flying paint is very apt to splash upon the clothes and hands of the user and onto the supporting surface .for the container. However, when the container is supplied with the present invention, the flying paint strikes against and is caught by the lip from which it may be easily removed. After the lid is closed the thumb nut is released and the detachable lip and handle assembly is allowed to slide downwardly over-the container and is freed therefrom at the bottom.
Having now described my invention and the manner in which the same is used, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a detachable lip and handle assembly for acontainer, the combination of a single piece of material comprising a band to encircle the body of the container provided with an upwardly and outwardly disposed flange to form a lip encircling the edges of thecontainer, said band having an outwardly bent tab at one end and an outwardly projecting handle portion at the other end, each thereof being provided with an opening to be alined with the otheropening when the assembly embraces the container, and means to draw the endsof the .band together comprising a bolt arranged. in the openings and a nut to screw over the bolt and against the tab, one end of the lip at its upper edge being provided with an inturned portion to form a groove and its opposite end being extended beyond the corresponding end of the band to engage slidingly in said groove. 2. A detachable lip and handle assembly, as claimed in claim 1, in which the material between the band and the lip is shaped into a lateral seat adapted to engage beneath a peripheral bead at the upper edge of the container.
