Description

Jan. 30, 1968 v. H. BALLMANN 3,366,272
' DETACHABLE EXTENSION FOR CONTAINERS OF PREPARED PAINTS Filed Sept. 50, 1966 G4,.
26 INVENTOR I9 V/Nmvr fllllll/AIV/V United States Patent 3,366,272 DETACHABLE EXTENSION FOR CONTAINERS OF PREPARED PAINTS Vincent H. Ballmann, 10028 Breckenridge, St. Ann, Mo. 63074 Filed Sept. 30, 1966, Ser. No. 583,401 Claims. (Cl. 220-90) This invention relates to a painters accessory that is adapted to surmount the open end of a conventional cylindrical container of paint, and more specifically to an auxiliary seal which shields the annular groove disposed within the containers rim flange from contamination by the liquid product therein.
Painters who have frequent use of prepared paints as stored and hermetically sealed within conventional cylindrical containers have in the past been plagued by the problem which presented itself during the admixing of the paint with their liquid vehicles within the container, or when pouring a portion of the paint therefrom; the displacement of the liquid body within the container generally contaminated its rim flange which rendered the container useless as a storage means for any unused paint therein, unless the annular groove disposed within the containers rim flange was thoroughly cleaned. This. problem generally constituted both a waste of paint and time.
Upon considering the problem, it had occurred to me that the aforementioned problem could be remedied by making available to users of prepared paints an accessory with the foregoing objects in mind.
The primary object of my invention being to provide an accessory for cylindrical containers of paint that would increase the capacity thereof.
Another object of my invention being to provide the means within the first stated object thatwould isolate the containers flange groove from the paint.
A further object of my invention being to provide a simple and effective means for surmounting the accessory upon the open end of the container securely therewith.
Another and important object of my invention being to provide an accessory of the aforementioned characteristics that could be easily and quickly applied to or removed from the open end of the container.
A further object of my invention being to provide an accessory for cylindrical containers that would facilitate the removal of a surplus of paint accumulated on and within the bristles of a paint brush, and which surplus of paint would be directed toward the interior of the paint container.
All of the foregoing and further objects and advantages of this invention will henceforth become apparent from the following specifications taken in connection with the accompanying drawing wherein like characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, and wherein:
FIG. 1 is a perspective view of the accessory, as adapted for use with a cylindrical container, which is shown in a partial view in order to conserve space.
FIG. 2 is a transverse sectional view taken along the line 5--5 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 3 is an enlarged view of a transverse section taken along the line 6-6 of FIG. 1.
FIG. 4 is a similar view as illustrated in FIG. 3 and which is taken along the line 77 of FIG. 1.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, and in which I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention with the paint container being indicated in general by the numeral 11 which is provided with a rim flange 12 in which is disposed a grooved member 13 that is spaced concentrically with the continuous wall 14 of the container 11. The grooved member 13 serves to secure fric- 3,366,272 Patented Jan. 30, 1968 tionally therein a complementary member that is provided by the containers closure. The composite of which serves as an air and liquid tight seal which both prevents egress of paint exteriorly of the container and the ingress of air in'teriorly thereof, and inasmuch as the containers closure has no relation with the invention, therefore it has not been illustrated.
The invention which comprises the detachable extension is substantially defined by an open-ended cylindrical member 10 when observed in a plan view, and which view is apparent from the illustration in FIG. 1. The cylindrical member 10 approximates substantially that of a right angled triangle 25 at its upper end portion when observed in transverse section, and as is so illustrated in FIG. 2. The open-ended cylindrical member 10 comprises a substantially ring-shaped base wall member 19, an integral upwardly sloping conical wall 16 in respect to the base wall member 19 and a downwardly directed cylindrical and integral wall member 15 which is disposed at right angles in respect to the base Wall member 19.
Depending and aligned vertically with the cylindrical wall member 15 and disposed below the plane of the base wall member 19 there is provided a complementary and integral wall member 28 which is contiguous with an inner and complementary wall member 20 that integrally depends from the extremity 29 of the base wall member 19, and depending from each radial extremity of the walls 20 and 28 and disposed at the lower end thereof there are provided a pair of opposed and complementary lateral and integral flanges 21 and 22 respectively. The depending walls 20 and 28 define a skirt member 30. The skirt member 30 is adapted to telescope over the open end of the container 11 and to surround its wall member 14 in spaced relation therewith.
The lateral flanges 21 and 22 serve as latching members to detachably secure thereon an elastic band 23 that is circular in cross section as is substantially illustrated in FIG. 4, and in which is provided an inverted and complementary T-shaped opening 24. The elastic band 23 serves both to frictionally secure the open-ended cylindrical member 10 to the wall 14 of the container 11, and for an adjustable relation therewith.
Interposing the base wall member 19 of the open-ended cylindrical member 10 therein is provided a complementary and integral channel member 17 that is defined by a web member 16a and a pair of depending and opposed integral flanges 18 which are spaced relative to each other to surround the periphery of the annular groove 13 within the flange 12 of the container 11.
The flanges 18 serve to provide a pair of jaws within which is detachably secured as by a press fit a complementary flat rubber gasket 27 that protrudes dependingly therefrom, and as is best illustrated in FIG. 3, and the gasket 27 serves to form a complementary seal for the annular groove disposed within the containers rim flange 12 which shields the groove 13 from an ingress of a liquid body of paint therein, when the gasket 27 is deformed within the groove 13 and complementary therewith as by a pressing downward action distributed about the upper radial edge of the cylindrical member 10 whereby the elastic band 23 cooperates to retain the deformation on the gasket 27 as has been henceforth described until manually released therefrom.
In practicing my invention, whereby it is now apparent that when I have my detachable extension surmounted upon the open end of a paint container 11, I can now readily add a selective amount of liquid vehicles to the paint for its proper service without overtaxing the containers capacity, as well as to manually intermix the constituents within the container 11 without resorting to the past practice of thoroughly cleaning the flange groove 13 before I could properly apply the containers closure for hermetically sealing the unused product within the container for future use. Furthermore, the vertex of the angle formed by base wall 19 and the upwardly sloping wall 16 as at 26 serves as a wiping edge to remove a surplus of paint from and between the bristles of a paint brush whereby the movement of the surplus paint would flow in the direction of the interior of the container and inasmuch as the vertex 26 is gracefully curved it Will serve to allow the bristles of a paint brush to gently glide upward therefrom.
Manifestly, variations may be resorted to and parts and features may be modified or used without others within the scope of the appended claims.
Having now fully described my invention, I claim:
