Claims.
The present invention relates to containers or lar shoulder or seat wall section IT. When in container sealing position, the cover 3| is disposed within the mouth of the container with its vertical wall section 32 in tight fitting engagement with the vertical wall section 22 of the frangible seal 2|. The cover flange 34 engages against the curl I! of the can body and the bottom 33 of the cover is in closely spaced relation to the panel 21 of the frangible seal as shown in Fig.
2. In this fully inserted position the cover protects the frangible seal 2| from being bulged out too far or from being broken by the force of the contents of the container during shipment or storage.
The vertical friction wall section 22 of the frangible seal functions as a resilient gasket between the cover side wall 32 and the body side wall I5. Functioning as a gasket the frangible seal provides a hermetic joint between the cover and the body, especially at the side seam of the body where leaks usually occur in a container of this character when the gasket of the instant invention is not used. It should be here noted that there is a slight clearance between the body curl I9 and the vertical wall section 32 of the cover to insure sealing engagement between the cover and the frangible seal.
To open the container, the cover is pried off, and the bottom of the frangible seal 2| is cut or broken out. Cutting out of the seal preferably is effected along a line of severance in the bottom groove 28 and near the lower end of the vertical wall section 22. A score line 31 may be provided in the frangible Seal to facilitate the breaking action. In either case, theremoval of the bottom of the frangible seal, results in substantially a full open mouth in the upper end of the container so that ready access to the contents or pouring of the contents may be accomplished. This removal of the bottom portion of the seal leaves intact its vertical wall section 22. This wall section continues to function as a hermetic gasket.

It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood from he ore ing description, and it will be apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing all of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A container comprising a body having an opening and an outwardly extending open loop portion in the body wall adjacent said opening, an imperforate friction plug reclosure cover having a vertical friction wall fitting within said opening, and an imperforate frangible seal having its outer periphery clamped within said body loop and thence extending down into and across said opening beneath said cover for hermetically sealing the container, said frangible seal also surrounding the vertical friction wall of said cover, to constitute a gasket for the cover to hermetically reseal the container when the cover is used as a reclosure after the frangible Sea] is broken.-
2. A container comprising a body having a body wall defining an opening and an outwardly extending open loop portion in the body wall adjacent said opening, a dish shaped frangible seal having its peripheral edge clamped within said body loop portion, said frangible seal having an annular vertical side wall portion extending down into said body in engagement with the inner wall surface thereof, said seal having a raised bottom panel wall extending across said opening for hermetically sealing said container, said bottom panel of the seal being connected to its said vertical side wall portion by a channel shaped annulus providing for a line of severance for cutting out the bottom panel to open said container, and a plug reclosure cover having an annular vertical friction wall insertable into the vertical side 'Wall portion of said frangible seal in tight fitting engagement, said seal constituting a hermetic gasket between the cover and the body before removal of the bottom of said seal to protect the seal during shipment and storage, said frangible seal side wall portion after removal of the seal constituting a gasket to hermetically protect any contents remaining in the container after initial opening.
3. A container comprising a body having a body wall defining an opening, a dish shaped imperforate frangible seal having its peripheral edge portion clamped within an outwardly extending loop portion of said body wall, said frangible seal having an annular side wall section extending down into said body in engagement with the inner surface of said body wall section and having a raised bottom panel wall section extending across said opening for hermetically sealin said container, said bottom panel being connected to said side wall section by a channel shaped annulus, a score line in said annulus providing a weakened area for breaking out the bottom panel to open said container, and an imperforate friction plug reclosure cover having a vertical annular friction wall and a closed countersunk bottom insertable into said frangible seal in tight fitting engagement with its annular side Wall section, the latter constituting a hermetic gasket between the cover and the body before removal of the bottom of said seal to protect the seal during shipment and storage and also after removal of the bottom of the seal to hermetically protect any contents remaining in the container after initial opening.
4. A container comprising a body having a body wall defining an opening and an outwardly extending open loop portion in the body wall adjacent said opening, a dish shaped frangible seal having its peripheral edge portion clamped within said body loop portion, said frangible seal having an annular side wall portion extending down into said body wall in close engagement with its inner surface, said seal having a bottom wall section extending across said opening for hermetically sealing said container, and a friction plug reclosure cover including a. countersunk bottom merging into a surrounding upright wall portion in turn terminating in a hemmed flange, said cover being insertable into the opening of said body with its upright wall portion in tight fitting engagement with the side wall portion of said frangible seal, the latter serving as a resilient hermetic gasket between the cover and the body.
5. A container comprising a body having an opening and an outwardly extending open loop portion in the body wall adjacent said opening, an imperforate frangible seal having its periphery clamped within said body loop portion and thence extending down into and across said opening for sealing said container, and a container cover having 2. depending wall disposed in frictional engagement with the downwardly extending portion of said seal, said frangible seal functioning as a gasket for said cover when the latter is inserted as a reclosure into said opening to hermetically reseal the container after the frangible seal is broken. 3
