Abstract

1,049,546. Container closures. AMERICAN FLANGE & MANUFACTURING CO. Inc. April 28, 1965 [May 4, 1964], No. 17850/65. Heading B8T. A closure for a can, bottle, jar &c. consists of a resilient plastics lid 4, enveloped by a metal sealing cap 5 to which a gripping tab 25 is integrally attached. An edge 15 of the lid 4 snaps over an upwardly diverging rim 2, Fig. 4 (not shown), of the can &c. and a sealing member 30, Fig. 7 (not shown), and an anvil 31 compress the metal cap 5 about the rim 2 so that the lid 4 forms a gasket between the metal cap and the rim. A lower portion 32 of the cap skirt 23 is pressed firmly against the can wall. The metal cap 5 is removed by pulling the tab 25, whereupon the cap tears along score lines 27, Fig. 1 (not shown), extending across the top the cap. Access to the can contents is obtained by prising the edge 15 of the.lid 4 over the rim 2. In a modification. Figs. 9, 10 (not shown), the metal sealing cap is in the form of a U-shaped, annulus 35 which clamps the lid 4 about the rim 2. A gripping tab 40 lies flat on the lid 4 in the centre of the annulus, score lines 42 enabling the annulus to be destructively removed. The closure may be applied to a can with an inwardly or outwardly curled-over rim. In a second modification, Fig. 13, (not shown), the closure is applied to a bottle having a beaded mouth 55. Since the bottle neck is sufficiently rigid, no back-up anvil 31 is needed with the sealing member 30 and so the centre portion of the closure is not recessed.
