Abstract

A polyethylene stopper for a container for liquid and dissolved gas has a cup portion (3) with peripheral sealing ribs (24, 25) and a peripheral flange (5) with depending annular ribs (23). The bottom of the cup has undulations giving flexibility to facilitate fitting the stopper in the neck of a container. An annular groove (22) around the top of the cup is provided to receive a thin aluminium disc which can be fitted by machine. The stopper is capped by a metal foil capping having a skirt portion which is closed over an external shoulder around the neck of the container. The capping has a central tear off strip.
