INVENTOR pnrrnp s'ra'rns rn'rnn'r orrion.
JOHN CORYDON GIBBS, F PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
DETACHABLE HINGED COVER FOR RECEPT'ACLES.
' ceptacles, of which thefollowing is a specificationr My invention relates to a detachable hinged cover for receptacles, and consists of hinge members'removably connected with the receptacle and a cover slidingly mounted on the members to be moved to open or closed positions. 7
It further consists of other novel features, all as will be hereinafter set forth.
The annexed drawingand the following description set forth in detail one mechanical form embodying theinvention, such detail construction being but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a receptacle with my invention applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the hinge construction in detached position. Fig. 3 is a sectional view, brokenaway and on an enlarged scale, of a portion of a receptacle, showing the band in position thereon. Fig. 1 is a sectional view, broken away and on an enlarged scale, of the rear upper portion of the receptacle, showing a portion of the cover in partly open position, and in dotted lines, the portion of the cover in open position.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
Referring to the drawings :1 designates a receptacle of any suitable form or construction, which is here shown as having a bead 2 and with the material curled inwardly at the upper edge 3.
4 designates a band adapted to be passed around the receptacle at a suitable point with respect to the top edge, and suitably shaped to conform to that of the receptacle. As here shown, theband is provided with a bead 5 adapted to receive the bead 2 of the receptacle toassist in holding the band in its relation to the receptacle.
6 designates a resilient member, such as a spring, which is suitably connected to the band in any desired manner with respect to the free ends thereof, to hold the same in position on the receptacle. As here shown, an end of the spring is connected adjacent Specification of Letters Patent.

each end of the band to hold the free ends in suitable relation. An end of the band 4: is provided with the tongues 7 and 8 spaced from each other, and between which the opposite end of the band is slidingly movable so that while adjustment of the ends is permitted, outward movement of the endsis prevented and they are held in suitable relaion.
Secured to or carried by the band is a hinge-member9, here shown as two in number, and formed of a strip of suitable material, extending outwardly from the band and then curved upwardly and inwardly with the end 10 thereof extending angularly to the upper limb 11 of the hinge member.
It will be understood, more particularly from Fig. 4:, that the hinge members proper extend over and engage the top edge of the receptacle and the ends 10 thereof extend downwardly within the receptacle upon the opposite side thereof from the band, so that the parts are suitably and properly held in Dosition.
The cover or lid 12 of the receptacle is slidingly mounted upon the hinge member or members 9, and as shown, is provided with an opening or openings 13 in the flange 14 of the cover, through which passes a hinge member 9, so that the cover or lid 12 can be moved from closed to open position by elevating the outer end and sliding the rear end thereof on the said hinge members.
15 designates a stop carried by the band 4: and projecting outwardly therefrom in order that the cover will abut and rest thereagainst in open position, the said stop 15 being preferably arranged in order that when the cover is in open position, the flange let will bear against the upper limb 11 of the hinge members 9 and with the stop bearing against an outer edge of the rear portion, so that the said cover will be held in suitable position, such as is shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4:.
It will be understood that the bead 2 upon the receptacle may not be provided in every instance as other suitable means may be employed, since it is desirable to have some engagement for the band to assist in holding the same from displacement vertically.
It will be understood that the invention is particularly adapted for use on cans or receptacles which are sent to the distributer with a closed cover, which is removed by the distributer and the detachable hinged display cover applied to the receptacle.
.. my invention may be employed for the mode herein explained. Change may therefore be made as regards the mechanism thus disclosed, provided the prlnciples 01' construction set'forth, respectively, 1n the following 1 claims are employed.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1.. A detachable hinged cover for receptacles comprising a band adapted to engage the body of the receptacle, means for holdingithe band in position upon the receptacle, strips extending outwardly from adjacent the upper edge of the band, upwardly Copies of this patent may be obtained for and inwardly to engage over the top edge of the body, a cover slidingly mountedon said strips, whereby the same may be moved to open or closed position, the said cover having a flange to seat the outer wall of the body above theband, and a stopextendmg outwardly from the band and against which i the cover rests when in open position.
2. A detachable hinged cover for recep tacles, comprising aband-adapted for connection with the body of the receptacle at a distance below the top thereof, strips on said band curving outwardly upwardly above the band and inwardly to extend over the top edge of the body and having bent ends engaging the inner wall-of the body, 7'
a cover having openings in which the strips are seated, whereby thecover is movable thereon to open orclosed position, and a stop on said band extending outwardly. V therefrom and p'ositionedto be engaged by the cover when in open PQSlt/lOIL JOHN CORYDON GIBBS;
