JOHN K. CHAMP, OF PARIS, KENTUCKY.
DRINKING-0UP.
To allwhomz't may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHNK; CHAMP, a citizen of the United States, residing at Paris, in the county of Bourbon and State of Kentucky, have invented i certain new and useful Improvements in Drinking- Cups, of which the following is a specifi cation.
This invention relates to an improvement in drinking cups.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a drinking cup-which may .be conveniently carried in the pocket, the construction being such that the bowl of the cup is effectually covered, the device presenting no sharpedges or projections to catch in the clothing.
A further object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the handle of the cup may be readily folded within the bowl portion, the handle being so supported as to rigidly contact with the closure when the same'is placed on the bowl, thereby preventing movement of the handlewith respect to the bowl.
A. still further object of the invention is to provide a resilient handle supporting member which embraces the bowl and forms a reinforcing filler for a beading formed at the edge'of the bowl, the beading providing a locking means for the lid member.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a construction in which the handle member is so constructed and supported with respect to the cup that when in its open position, it may be conveniently grasped and the cup supported against tilting. the handle when folded within the cup having its portion which is grasped by the fingers maintained out of contact with the inner wall of the bowl.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in
which Figure 1 is a transverse sectional view through the cup, showing the handle folded therein. Fig. 2 is a view with the lid removed and the handle extended. Fig. 3 is a transverse section showing a modified form of the handle. Fig. 4 is a perspective 'view of the handle shown in Fig. 3. Fig. 5
is a detail view of the bracket which supports the handle. 7
Corresponding and like parts are referred Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed September 23, 913. Serial No. 791,443.
to in'the following description and indicated in all the views of 'the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
Broadly, the present invention contemplates the provision of a drinking cup provided with a handle which may be folded within the cup when not in use, the handle placement.
In the drawings, 10 designates a cup which may be of any suitable design, the edge portion 11 being rolled to form a beading 12. This beading is rolled about a resilient strand of wire 13, whereby the bead ing is reinforced and at the same time rendered. resilient. The lid 1 1 consists of a disk formed with a flange 15 which is recurved, whereby it may engage over the beading of the cup and be efiectually held against displacement.
- In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2 the handle 16 is formed with a curved shank 17 which is provided with the finger-engaging loop 18. The handle is supported by a bracket 19 which is secured to the inner wall of the cup adjacent its edge portion.
, This bracket is formedwith apertured ears "permits the same to be extended over the edge of the bowl whereby it may be conveniently grasped. It will also be noted that when the handle is folded within the cup, it will be so supported that the portions of the same which are engaged by the fingers do not contact with the inner wall of the cup, the shank contacting with the rivet which passes through the opening 23 in the bracket 19 and maintaining the portion 24 of the handle in contact with the lid whereby movement of the handle with respect to the cup is prevented.
In the form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, the handle 25 consists of a shank 26 bent abruptly as at 27, whereby it may engage over the edge of the cup when in its extended 7 position and which maintains the loop 28 in contact with the lid when in its folded position.
What I claim is 1. A drinking cup comprising a bowl, and
a handle for the bowl having a shank piv-l oted to the wall of the bowl in close spaced' relation thereto "and downwardly spaced within the bowl vertically of said wall, the handle being movable upon its pivot to lie within the bowl and to lie exteriorly there-- of, the said shank of the handle being ar ranged to engage over the rim-of the bowl wall when the handle is in position eXteriorly of the bowl, the said rim constituting Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing Washington, 1L0.
,2. A drinking cup comprising a 'bowl,za bracket secured to the wall, ofthe bowl in teriorly thereof and downwardly spacedv from the rim of the bowl, anda handle for the. bowl having. a shank pivotally connected to said bracket, the handle being movable upon its pivot to lie within the bowl and to lie exteriorly thereof, the shank of the handle being arranged to engage overthe rim ofthe bowl wallwhen the handle is in position exteriorly of the bowl, thehandle when in position within the bowl being supported above the ,bottom wall thereof by the engagementef said shank with the bracket.
In testimony whereof I aifix my signature in presence of twov witnesses.
