ANDREW BJZMNAM. PNOTO-UTHO. WASHINGTDNVD C UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE T. PETERS, OF JERSEY CITY, NEWV JERSEY.
HINGED COVER FOR CANS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 550,842, dated December 3, 1895.
Application filed May 3, 1896, Serial No. 548,012 (N'o model.)
T 0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE T. PETERS, a citizen of the United States, residing at J ersey City Heights, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented new and useful Improvements in Hinged Covers for Cans, of which the following is a specification.
In the use of such articles as condensedmilk cans and like cylindrical vessels from which the contents are at times consumed gradually it is of importance to preserve or protect the contents remaining over in the cans during the gradual consumption, and to accomplish this object I have devised a flanged hinged cover, which cannot only be readily removed from an empty can and readily applied to a freshly-opened can, but which is so shaped that it can readily open and close, and which, when closed, will seat its flange snugly about the can to effect proper closure; and the invention resides in the novel featurcs of construction set forth in the following specification and claims and illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the cover. Fig. 2 is a section along 2 2, Figs. 1 and 3. Fig. 3 is a section along 3 3, Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the cover.
The cover 5 is hinged at 6 and has its flange 7 partly cut away at said hinge, as seen at 8. The flange portions 9 alongside said cut-out portions are turned outward. When the cover starts on its opening swing about hinge or pivot 6,.the portions 9 will swing toward the side 10 of the can, but being bent outward, as seen, said portions 9 will not bind or scrape against the can.
The hinge 6 is shown carried by a clamp 11 and 12, which can be sprung or slipped onto or off the can, said clamp parts 11 and 12 being joined by a bead 13, which can sit over or receive the bur or lip frequently left by cutting open the can, so that said clamp can seat itself snugly or properly in place. This clamp 11 and 12 is shown as having secured or clamped thereto the piece or strip 1A, having a portion bent into eyes 15, forming bearings for the hinge-pin 6, and a portion 16, bent to form a stop for preventing the excessive opening of the cover. The lower portion 17 of the piece 14, as also the lower portion 18 of the clamp part 12, is bent outward, so as to form a rigid finger-piece or handle.
This
handle 17 18 enables the clamp to be readily put in place or removed.
The hinge pin or pintle 6 being located somewhat below the upper edge of the can, the flange parts 8, extending or reaching down over the edge of the can to the pintle 6, will cover or satisfactorily protect the can contents at the portion near said pintle 6, so that this can portion is protected as well as the other portions which are protected by the flange 7.
WVhat I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A removable hinged flanged cover fora cylindrical can or vessel, said cover having the flange at the hinge partly cut away, and the flange portions alongside said out out portion turned outward substantially as described.
2. A removable hinged flanged cover for a cylindrical can or vessel, said cover having the flange at the hinge partly cut away, and the flange portions alongside said out out portion turned outward, and a spring clamp for supporting said hinge, said clamp having its upper portion beaded to receive the bur substantially as described.
3. A removable hinged flanged cover for a cylindrical can or vessel, said cover having the flange at the hinge partly cut away, and the flange portions alongside said out out portion turned outward, a spring clamp, and a piece secured to said clamp, said piece having its upper portions bent to form a bearing for the hinge pin and a stop for the cover,
the lower portions of said piece and of a clamp part being bent outward to form ahandle substantially as described.
4. A can or vessel having a hinge or pintle located below its upper edge, and a flanged cover fitted to said'vessel and having the flange at the hinge made to extend down to 5 said hinge, portions of said flange alongside said hinge being bent outward substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE T. PETERS.
