CAN-COVER.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, AUeUsr H. LAND- wni-m, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Holland, in the county of Ottawa and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Covers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in can covers and more particularly to such covers for garbage cans, ash cans, and the like, the same being provided with an automatic closure, and its object is to provide the same with improved means for hinging and operating said closure, improved means for maintaining rigidity of its parts and dust tight oints to the closure, and to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of a device embodying my invention with a portion broken away to show the construction; Fig. 2 an enlarged vertical section on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 a plan view of a portion of the same showing the upper part removed down to the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.

1 represents a fiat cover of any convenient size having a large rectangular central opening. This opening is closed by a hood consisting of a top member 2 inclined at substantially 45 and triangular end members 3 of substantially right angled shape. The top and end members are at the lower edge securely attached to the cover 1 at the margin of the opening, preferably by a double seam, and toeach other on the inclined angles. The upper edge of the in clined top 2 is prolonged in a curve forward and downward and thence inward and upward as shown at 6 forming a substantial rounded upper angle the edge being spaced apart from the inclined portion sufficient to receive the upper edge of a closure 4 which latter is bent outward and downward as at 7 with its outer edge pivotally resting in the concave lower portion of the edge 6 as illustrated in Fig. 2. The closure 4 is thus Specification of Letters Patent.

pivotally supported and at the same time free to swing inward. The support is also carried considerably outside the plane of the closure whereby its weight tends to gravitally force the same to closed position. The lower edge of the closure at projects within the opening of the cover when closed and is prolonged inward andconvenient distance as at 5 and preferably provided with a weighted inner edge having a wire or rod therein which operates as a weight oppositely projecting from the pivot of the closure, which weight also tends to swing the same to closed position and also strengthens and holds the edge straight. The top at the front edge of the opening is also turned downward as at 1 to hold the same straight and form a straight edge engaged by the closure. The vertical edges of the closure are folded outward asat 9 which tends to strengthen and hold the same in shape and when closed these edges project within casings 8 formed by folding the forward edge of the triangular ends 3 inward and thence rearward as shown in Fig. 3.

I am thus able to construct a strong and cheap automatically operated closure which tends to efiectually and automatically close and by virtue of the inwardly projecting weight at the bottom and the outwardly projecting pivoted edge 7 will always promptly close and stay closed even though the closure be made vertical.

What I claim is 1. A can cover, comprising a cover having a hood open at one side, the top of the hood above the opening being turned downward and thence inward and upward and a closure for said opening having its upper edge turned outward and downward and pivotally supported directly on said edge in the concave inwardly and upwardly turned por tion of the top and otherwise out of contact with said portion.

2. A can cover. comprising a hood having an opening in one side. the top of the hood above said opening being curved outward and downward and thence inward and upward and a closure for said opening curved outward and downward directly upon said top and pivotally supported at the edge at the bottom of the concave inwardly and upwardly turned portion of the top and outside the plane of said closure.

3. A can cover, comprising a hood having an opening in one side, the top of the hood above said opening being turned clownward and thence inward and upward, a closure for said opening having its upper edge turned outward and downward and pivotally resting with its edge engaging the bottom of the inwardly turned portion of the top and also having its lower edge extended inward to form a weight and strengthen the said edge.

A can cover, comprising a hood having an opening in one side, the sides of the hood being turned inward and rearward forming a hollow casing open at the rear, the top of the hood being turned downward and inward forming a support for the closure and a closure for said opening-turned outward and downward at the top and pivoted directly upon its downwardly turned edge, and also having its side edgesturned outward and projecting into said casings when the closure is in normal position.

5. A can cover, comprising a cover having a rectangular opening, the edge of the cover at the front side of said opening being folded downward, a hood above said opening, having an inclined top and triangular ends secured to the top .at the other three sides of the Opening, the top being prolonged at the front and turned downward and thence inward and upward and having its edge spaced apart from the top, the triangular ends being turned inward at the front edges and thence rearward forming hollow casings open at the rear, a closure having its upper edge turned outward and downward and pivotally resting in the concave inwardly turned part of the top and having its lower edge turned inward and also having its side edges turned outward and normally extending into the casings.
