Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented sept. a, Arais.
Application `filed August 3, 1914. Serial- No:.854,647.
To all whom t may concern Be it knownthat I, I-sAAc' y1J.llZlAizcUsia la citizen of the United States, residing in Richmond, in the county of Henrico and State of Virginia, have invented a new and use-ful Improvement in Pocket-Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates in general to pocket boxes, and more particularly to boxes adapted for the containing of tobacco and the like, which are intended to be carried in the hip pocket of the consumer, of the type shown in my co-pending application Serial No. 842547, filed June 3, 1914. Boxes adapted to be carried in the hip or other pocket are most convenient when of reniforin shape and boxes ordinarily constructed of this shape are provided with covers pivoted along the convex or outwardly bulging sides. Such an arrangement causes the cover to stand outwardly from the box horizontally, in position to be readily bent or torn away should it 'all to the floor while open or should an object fall upon,it. The cover when so placed requires that the contents of the box be poured from one end of the open side because the inward curving of the concave side'tends to deliver the contents at two points each adjacent an end. The cover itself in those boxes prevents pouring the contents from the convex side.
A principal object of the present invention is the provision of a box of this kind wherein the cover may be hinged along the concave or inwardly bent side so that when the cover is open the contents of the box may be poured over the convex side which due to its shape causes the delivery to be confined to a single central location and wherein the cover when open will be as close to the box as is possible in structures of this form, the parts being so constructed and arranged that the cover, in open position, will extend vertically upwardly.
It is the further object of my invention lto provide a box of this type which will be strongly built and eliicient and durable in operation and which will require only a single centrally disposed hinge to form the pivotal connection between the cover and body.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the acf ferred einbodimenteth-ereof.
companying drawing illustrating a pre- @nr'the drawing, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a pocket box embodying my invention taken from the rea-r and at one side; Fig. 2 is a front elevation showing the cover in closed position; Fig. 3 is a front elevation of said cover; Fig. 4 is a rear elevation of the saine; Fig. 5 is a top plan view of the cover; and Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the box with the cover in open position.
On the drawings an ordinary tobacco box 7 consisting of a body of reniform crosssectional shape is shown and is provided with a cover 8 having a downwardly depending flange 9 adapted to embrace the upper or open end of said body. This cover is hinged at l0 to the center of the concave or inwardly extending side of the body and cover. The hinge 10 consists of a pair of lips 11 formed on one of the parts, preferably on the cover and the lip 12 disposed between them and formed on the other part, a suitable pivot pin 13 being provided. In order that the cover may open I cut away the material of the flange 9 as seen at 14E to the shape of the outer surface on the concave side of the body so that when the cover is in elevated position the rear flange of the cover rests against the body as seen in Fig. 6. This cut away portion extends from adjacent the hinge to adjacent the ends of the cover and provides a curved surface at the lower edge of the rear portion of the flange of the cover corresponding in configuration with the coniiguration of the concave side of the reniform body. A suitable shoulder 15 is provided on the front of the body for the flange 9 to rest against when closed. The peculiar curvature given the flange of the cover permits the cover to open and close when the hinge is located as described, and this location of the hinge holds the cover close to the body and sustains it in substantially upright position when open so that it cannot protrude horizontally from the box in position to be torn away should the box be dropped to the floor when the cover is open.
.It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be understood without Jfurther description and it is apparent that various changes may be made in the form, construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the Y Q Y 1,152,429
