Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 10, 1912. Serial No. 696,443.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WVILLIAM S. LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Auburn, in the county of Cayuga and State of New York, have invent-ed new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide abox in which the articles contained therein can be efiiciently exhibited in showcases or show windows.
The invention embodies among other features a box particularly adapted to contain cigars and like smokable articles and which can be arranged so that when the box with the contents thereof is placed in a showcase the contents of the box and the label on the inner side of the cover will be presented to full view.
A further embodiment of the invention resides in a box provided with a foldable member whereby when the cover of the box is moved into open position and the box is placed in a showcase, the cover will not take up as much space as the usual covers of c1gar boxes do, thus permit-ting of exhibiting a larger number of boxes containing articles, in showcases and in which when the box is mounted in the show case, the articles contained therein, together with the label on the inner side of the cover will be presented to full View.
In the further disclosure of the. invention, reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding part-s in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing the box in open position. Fig. 2 is a perspective view showing the box in closed position. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 in Fig. 1. Fig. 42 is a fragmentary vertical sectional. view taken on the line 41 in Fig. 2.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a box body 10 having the upper edge 11 of the front side 12 lower than the upper edges 13 of the ends 14, the forward end 15 of the cover 16 being received between the upper edges 13 with the extreme forward end of the cover 16 adapted to repose upon the upper edge 11. The box body 10 is open at the rear and secured to the under side of the bottom 17 of the box Patented May 27 1913.
body at the rear edge thereof is one end of a foldable member 18, said foldable memher being preferably made of cloth or the like and extending upwardly to close a the rear part of the box body, the upper edge of the foldable member being bent around the rear end of the cover 16 and securedto. the upper side of the cover16 by a strip 19,
the lower end of the foldable member being secured to the under side of the bottom 17 by a strip 20 as shown. In a similar manner the ends of the foldable member 18 are secured to the rear edges of the sides 14 by strips 21, as shown in Fig. 2.
As mentioned heretofore, the front end of the cover 16 is adapted to repose bet-ween the upper edges 13 when the cover is in closed position and the mentioned cover adjacent the rear end thereof is provided with flanges 22 which are adapted to repose upon reduced portions 23 of the sides 14L when the cover is in closed position, the forward ends of the flanges 22 forming stop members for S-shaped hook members 24 mounted to swing on the sides 14 and movable to support the cover as will be hereinafter more fully disclosed.
Now assuming that the box body 10 has been filled with cigars and the like and closed as shown in Fig. 2, for the purpose of sending the box to the retail dealer, when the retail dealer receives the box of cigars and desires to exhibit the same in his show window he first unloosens the front end of the cover 16 from the front side 12 of the box body 10 in the usual manner, and then with a knife edge cuts through the strips 21 and the end portions of the foldable member 18 thus disengaging the larger portion of the foldable member from the sides 14. The cover is now swung into open position and as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the cover when swung into open position will move downwardly so that the. lower edge of the cover will lie against the rear edge of the bottom 17, the member 18 being adapted to fold rearwardly as shown. The hook members 2 1 are now swung upwardly so that the outer bent ends of the hook memberswill pass around the outer side of the cover with intermediate portions of the hook members engaging the upper or forward ends of'the flanges 22, said ends constituting stop members as mentioned heretofore, thus retaining the cover in open position'and simultaneously exposing to full View the label on the inner side of the cover and the contents of the box.
I claim 1. In a box, the combination with a box body open along one side thereof, of a flexible member on the box body, a cover having connect-ion with the said flexible member, the said flexible member forming a side of the box to close the open side thereof when the cover is in closed position on the box and movable into folded position when the cover is moved into open position, hook members on the said box body and adapted for connection wit-h the cover for supporting the same in open position, the said cover when in open position being adapted to form a side of the said box body.
2. In a box, the combination with abox body open along one side thereof, of a flexible member on the said box body, a cover having connection with the flexible member, the said flexible member forming a side of the box body when the cover is in closed position and the said cover forming a side of the box body when the cover is in open position, and means on the said box body and engaging the said cover to retain the same in open position to form a side of the box body.
3. In a box, the combination with a box body open along one side thereof, of a flexible member on the said box body, a cover having connection with the flexible member, the said flexible member forming a side of the box body when the cover is in closed position and the said cover forming a side of the box bodywhen the cover is in open position, and hook members on the said box body and engaging the said cover to retain the same in open position to form a side of the box body.
In testimony whereof I ahix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
WILLIAM S. LYON.
