U MillMINIMUMllIHIlIHHIHIHIHIIMUINIIHHIII IIN! TRNEYS TTNTTED STATES PATENT FFICE.
WILLIAM S. ADLER, 0F ATLANTA, GEORGIA.
BOX.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ILLIAM S. ADLER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Atlanta, in the county of Fulton and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new and improved container of the paper box type, which is adapted to contain candy or the like in such a manner that it will retain its freshness, and still can be readily exposed to view. v
An object of this invention is to provide a box having a plurality of shelves movable relative to each other so as to expose siinultaneously the contents of all of the shelves, and which can be folded up in a convenient, air-tight manner, so that the contents will be protected from dust and dirt and kept perfectly fresh.
A further object of this invention is to provide a box with a back detachable from the body portion, with a tray secured to the body portion and a tray secured to the back, and with parallel connecting links for adjustably connecting the first-mentioned tray wit-h the second-mentioned tray, whereby the back tray and cover connected thereto can be moved relatively to the body portion and the tray connected thereto, for the purpose of exposing the contents of the trays simultaneously to view. These and further objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, will be more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view showing the box closed; Fig. 2 is a perspective view partly broken away to show the underlying structure, and with the cover open to show the contents of the top tray; and F ig. 3 is a perspective view, with the cover open and the top tray removed from superposition, so as to expose the contents of the vbottom tray, as well as the top tray.
Referring more particularly to the separate parts of this invention as embodied in the form shown in the drawings, 1 indicates the body portion of the box, which is shown to embody a bottom 2, a front 3, and

sides l; and 5. The back, which is arranged to be parallel to the front 3, is disconnected from the body portion 1; that is to say, is separated therefrom, and is indicated at (3.
Hinged to the back 6 in any suitable manner, there is provided a cover 7, which has flanges S extending around the front and sides, adapted to overlap a reduced portion 9 of the body portion 1, which is formed by a rabbet 10 in the body portion, so that the outer surface of the flanges 8 will extend flush with the outer surface of the body portion 1 when the cover is closed.
Secured in the body portion 1 in any suitable manner, there is provided a tray 11, which preferably embodies a bottom 12, front and rear 13, and sides 111-, so as to form a complete inclosure open at the top only. It will be noted that the tray 11 is spaced apart from the sides 4f and 5 of the body `portion 1, so as to permit the swing between the sides of the shelf and the sides of the body portion, of two pairs of links 15 and 16, a pair of which is arranged at each side of the sheft 11. These links 15 and 16 are pivotally connected at their lower ends to the ends of the shelf 11, and at their opposite ends are pivotally connected to a shelf 17, which is 1rigidly secured at its rear side to the back 6, and extends at right-angles thereto. This shelf 17 also preferably is providedV with a bottom, sides and ends, forming a complete inclosure, open at the top only. It will be noted that thelinks 15 and 16 are arranged parallel to each other, so that the movement of the upper shelf 17 relatively to the body portion will be always parallel to the lower shelf 11, and upward therefrom, so that in uncovering and covering the lower shelf, the candy or other contents thereof will be in no wise interfered with, either jammed, crushed or scraped.
It will be noted that the bott-om 2 of the body portion 1 not only projects beyond the sides of the body portion at the front, but also at the back, so that the bottom of the back 6 can rest thereon when the box is closed. This back 6 also forms a leg, which supports the upper shelf and the cover when the box is opened to its extended position. Of course, the pivot points which connect the links 15 and 16 with the shelves will not permit the forward end of the upper shelf 17 to swing beyond a certain point, which is arranged tolimit the motion of the forward end to a level corresponding with that which vthe rear end of the shelf 17 will assume when the leg 6 rests lon the same support which the bottom of the body portion 1 rests on.
It will thus be seen that there is provided a simple and attractive box for containing candies and the like, which can be opened to expose the contents of all the shelves at the same time, and this can be done without danger of crushing or scraping the contents of any of the shelves. It will also be seen that the connection between the shelves is of such a nature that the motion will be even and substantially rigid.
Vhile I have shown one embodiment of my invention, I do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations and modifications which may come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention', I
claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A box comprising a body portion embodying a front and sides havin@ reducedvupper portions, and a bottom having its edge extended beyond the said front and sides Vand the open back 0I the body portion, a lower shelf secured within said body portion, an upper shelf pivotally connected to the lower shelf, a body back rigidly secured to the said upper shelf and extending downwardly from, and at right-angles, thereto, and a cover pivotally connected to said back, said back being adapted to close the open rear body portion and tol rest upon the rearwardly extended edge of the said bottom, when closed, and the said cover being enga-geable over the reduced upper portions to lock the parts against displacement when said cover is disclosed, all for the purpose of forming a candy container which will be substantially air-tight and capable of pre- VILLIAM S. ADLER.
