SPEGIFIGATION' forming part of Letters Patent No. 566,563, dated August 2-5, 1896.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, FRANK P. DEER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Balti more, in the State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Cups and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cups, and especially to a drinking-cup having a cover provided with an aperture through which the contents of the cup may be poured and the portion of the cover surrounding the aperture serving as a guard to prevent the mustache coming in contact with the liquid. A further purpose of the cover is to retain the aroma of the contents of the cup, prevent the contents from spilling in case the cup is upset, and also prevent anything from falling into the cup.

A further part of the invention relates to the peculiar construction of a cup having a sliding cover having two of its edges parallel a portion of their lengths and beaded, being adapted to slide in grooves in the upper edge of the cup, one side or a portion of one side of the cup being flattenechso as to allow of a better adjustment of the cover.

To these ends and to such others as the in vention may pertain, the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of the parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.

I clearly illustrate my invention in the accompanyin g drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate like parts throughout the several views, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved cup and cover. Fig. 2 is a central Serial No. 592,808. (No model.)

Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the cup, which is made of any suitable material and in substantially the shape of an ordinary cup excepting a portion of one side is flattened, as seen at B. The upper edge of the cup, in outline, is substantially the shape of a section of an ellipse, as seen in Fig. 1, and a groove 0 extends internally about the upper edge-of the cup into which the cover I), having a shape corresponding to the outline of the upper edge of the cup, is designed to slide on the beaded edge E thereof.

The curved end of the cover is notched out at F and, when the cover is shut, forms an aperture through which the contents of the cup maybe poured. An aperture G ornotch is formed in the side wall of the cup, through which the handle of a spoon may be passed, so that the contents of the cup may be stirred while the cover is closed.

From the foregoing it will be seen that the aroma of the contents of the cup may be retained, and as a mustache-cup the lips and heard are prevented from coming into contact with the liquid, while by the peculiar shape of the cup the cover may be securely held in place and the contents stirred without removing the cover.
