To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns H. STEBBINS, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Receptacle, fully set forth .in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The present invention relates to receptacles and more particularly to that type having a slip cover with means arranged to operate between the body and the cover for the purpose of readily removing the cover from the body, an object of this invention being to provide a construction which has its movements on the receptacle limited so that it will at all times be in a position for removing the cover when the cover is fitted to the box body or will be in a position permitting the cover to b fitted to the body without any readjustment of the operating or removing device after the removing operation. To these and other ends, the invention consists in certain parts and combinations of parts all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings: Figure l is a view in side elevation of the receptacle showing the cover in position upon the body; Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the cover removing device shifted to lift one side of the cover on the body; Fig. 3 is a plan view of the receptacle; Fig. 4: is a section on the line a-a, Fig. 3, with the cover fitted to the body; and Fig. 5 is a section on the same line showing the cover partially removed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the box or receptacle body which is of the ordinary form employed for containing paste or blacking, the box in this instance having below its upper edge, a surrounding bead 2, that portion 3 of the body above the bead being adapted to fit within the cover 4, which, in this instance, also has a surrounding bead 5 above its lower edge. When the cover is fitted to the box body, the two beads 2 and 5 lie in spaced relation, the lower edge of the cover being in abutment with the bead 2.

preferably to the side wall of the body below the bead 2, said lever being curved transversely in order to conform to'the curvature of the box body and having at one end, an outwardly turned portion 8 which serves as a finger piecefor manipulating the lever. At the opposite end of the lever, an upward laterally extending arm is provided which is bent betweenits ends to provide a recess 9 that receives the bead 2 in order that the extreme end 10 of the arm may lie above the bead 2 and below the bead 5 when the cover is fitted to the body 1. The opposite ends of this recess serve to limit the movement of the lever on the box body 1- and, in this way, when the lever is moved to remove the cover, it'cannot pass beyond a certain point and consequently the end 10 will be engaged by the cover bead 5, when the cover is fitted to the body, thus carrying the opening lever back to the position shown in Fig. l with the fitting of the cover to the box body. When the cover is fitted to the body, the position ofthe end 10 between the beads 5 and 2 prevents any free movement of theoperating lever on the b'ox'body.
From the foregoing, it will be seen that there has been provided a receptacle with a cover moving device which is held against undue movement on the receptacle and which only requires a manipulation for the purpose of removing the cover, as it is antomatically moved to the normal position when the cover is fitted to the body.
"What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In combination with a box body having a surrounding bead below the upper edge of the body and a slip cover for said box body cooperating with the exterior of the latter above the bead and having a surrounding bead above the lower edge of the cover,'an operating lever pivoted to one of said parts and having a laterally extending arm formed with a portion to lie between the beads and having a recess to pass above the bead on the part on which the lever is mounted, the end walls of the recess cooperating with the bead to limit the movement of the lever in' two directions.
