To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK R. Noons, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hillsdale, in the county of Hillsdale and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Removable Covers for Containers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention is a cover for receptacles having for its purpose to facilitate the movement of a tight fitting cover by providing means on the cover which will serve as a hand operated device for removing the cover from a receptacle.
A further purpose of the invention is to provide a cover, especially'for circular or cylindrical'containers, having means for enabling it to be loosened or detached without the use of tools of any form, thereby precluding the disturbance of the contents of the container by the manipulation of an opening tool; theopening means being preferably integral with the cover, but may also be constructed to utilize material which would otherwise be a waste. The cover may be replaced and removed repeatedly without in any manner affecting the efficiency of'the device.
The cover actuating means operates equally as efficient on covers which must be lifted from the receptacle as with covers which must be rotated to be removed.
The invention consists in a cover which is preferably struck up from sheet metal to provide a depending flange, and cover operating means rigid with the depending flange, said cover operating means providing a seat against which an operator may apply force to lift or rotate a tight fitting cover.
The invention consists, also, in the features of construction hereinafter described, shown in the drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 have illustrated different embodiments of the invention, but the constructions shown therein are to be understood as illustrative only, and not as defining the limits of the invention.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a cover constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the cover view showing the blanks of Fig. 3 outlined on a sheet of metal, from which the blanks are stamped or cut out. Fig. 5 is a plan view of another embodiment of the invention applied to a rotative cover. Fig. 6 is a side elevation of the cover of Fig. 5. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of another embodiment of means for rotating a cover. Fig. 8 is a plan view of the cover illustrated in Fig. 7.
The receptacle cover shown at 10 in Figs. 1 2 and 3 embodies a depending flange 11, shown in the drawings as an annular flange which is adapted to fit over a circular container 12 having a straight annular top, such as is illustrated in Fig. 1.
This cover is provided with cars 13 projecting from the annular flange 11, preferably at the base thereof. One or more of these ears 13 may be employed, and each ear is provided with an upstanding stress-flange 14, see Fig. 1, the inner ends 15 of this stressflange, Fig. 2, bearing against the depending flange 11 of the cover, thereby serving as strengthening means for the ears, to prevent the ears from being bent out of shape during the stress or pressure applied to the ears when removing a top 10 from the receptacle 1.2. The upstanding stress-flange 14L serves also to promote the comfort of the operator in applying the finger or thumb to the ears, without cutting the same, in either lifting or rotating the cover to remove the same from the container.
It is preferred to make the covers shown in Figs. 1 and 2 of sheet metal, which is stamped or otherwise cut from a sheet of metal M, the blanks being indicated at 16 in Figs. 3 and 4, the metal forming the ears 13 being integral with the portion 16. These blanks, after having been cut from the sheet of metal are operated upon by a suitable forming tool and bent at the line 17 of Fig. 3 to form the depending flange 11, the ears 13 being stuck up at the same time from the base of the flange on the dotted lines 18 of Fig. 3, to produce the upstanding stress flange 14. By reference to Fig. 4, it will be observed that the ears 13 are composed entirely of metal which would otherwise be a waste in the sheet.
In Figs. 1 and 2, the ears are shown as standing at substantially right angles to the depending cover, said ears having straight sides 19 and a rounded free end 20.
In Figs. 5 and 6, I have illustrated another embodiment of the ears wherein an ear 21 may be formed from a sheet of metal M integral with the cover or may be soldered to the depending flange 22 of said cover. This depending flange 22 is shown in Fig. 6 as provided with screw threads 23 to be applied to a container 12 having a screw cap or cover. The car 21 is provided with an upstanding stress flange, one portion of which, 2%, serves as a finger pressure device,
while the other portion thereof engages one end of portion 2 1 and the depending flange 22 of the cover, the other end of portion 2% abutting against said depending flange 22, as illustrated in Fig. 5 to strengthon the portions 21, 24 of the ear. The flange portion 25 preferably extends from the outer end of flange portion 24, inthe form of an arc until the other end of said flange portion 25 engages the depending flange 22 at 27, thereby serving as a rigid support for the car when pressure is applied against flange 2st to turn the screw threaded cover for the purpose of removing the cover from the container 12.
In Figs. 7 and 8, I have illustrated still another embodiment of the cover rotating mechanism, for employment on covers having screw-threaded connections with a receptacle. In this form of the device, the screw threaded depending flange 22 is provided with flat ears or wings 26 secured in any suitable manner near the base of said flange 22,
said ears 26 having a broadened base, as at 27, which is on a horizontal plane with that of the top of the cover, the remaining portion ofthe ear being twisted at a substantial angle, if not at right angles, to the base of said ear in order that the main portion 26 of the ear may be in the direction of movement for rotating the cover to open and close the same with reference to the container. 12, serving as a thumb pressure device. preferred to employ two of these ears, or wings, although it is obvious. that only one may be so employed.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim'as new and desire to obtain by Letters Patent is 1. A metallic cover comprising a depending flange, cover actuating means integral with the depending flange and projecting from saidflange, and a reinforcing device integral with the cover actuating means, the ends of said reinforcing device bearing against said depending flange.
2. A metallic cover comprising a depending flange, an ear integral with and project-r ing from the lower edge of'said flange, and a reinforcing device 1n the form of an upreinforcing flange bearing against the de pending flange of the cover for thepurpose described.
