VASHING'ION L. SCOVILLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CAN-OPEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 496,448, dated May 2, 1893.
Application iiled August 1'7J 1891.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that I, WASHINGTON L. Sco- VILLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county ofV Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Can-Openers, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, that will enablerothers to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which- Figurel is a plan; Fig. 2 the reverse of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a detached detail of the cuttingblade and holder; and Fig. 4 a broken-away section on line 4 Fig. 2.
This invention relates to improvements in can-openers, and has for its object to provide a device of this character that is more especially intended for use on cans other than those of a cylindrical form, such as sardine Referring to the drawings, A represents an elongated frame having the handle part B formed integral therewith. This frame is of a contour corresponding to that of a sardine can, the frame and handle part consisting of a single casting. The inner end of the fixed handle Bis provided on the upper side with the pivot-pin a., (Fig. 1,) which secures the movable handle-member C to the companion member. The handle-member C is provided in its inner -end with the elongated slot a through which the connecting pivot joint pin projects, the projecting end ot' said pin being screw threaded for the engagement of the thumb holding or clamping-nut a2, as shown in Fig. l. Ordinarily the clamping-nut will be set loosely so that the handle C will have an endwise movement and provide for an automatic adjustment in following the contour of the frame part in the operation of opening a can.
The cutting-blade holder or plate D is set in the upper side of the frameAand secured to the carrying-handle C by the pivot-pin a3, inserted in the aperture a4, which permits the holder to adjust itself and conform to the frame as it is caused to traverse the same.
holder are provided with the guide-pins b b,
which extend down along the edge of the Serial No. 402,882. (No model.)
serted in the under side of the carrying-handle; the lower end passing underneath and having loose contact with the under side of the frame part and assisting in retaining the holder in proper position. The under side of the frame is also provided with a number of downwardly projecting lugs d, which are adapted to bear against the edge of the can and retain the frame in place during the operation. The 'prick-points cl d can be forced into the metal and also assist in holding the vframe in place.
The frame may be of any desired shape so as to correspond to the contour of any particular class of cans. The dotted lines indicate the relative position of the can.
This arrangment provides a device by means of which, sardine cans maybe opened with the greatest ease and facility.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a can-opener, the combination with a frame and integral handle-member, of the companion handle-member, provided with an elongated slot and secured to the integral handle by a pivot-pin passing through said slot, and the holder, loosely seated upon said frame and pivoted to the slotted handle, whereby said slotted handle is adapted to have an automatic endwise adjustment to conform to the contour of the frame part, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In a can-opener, the combination with the frame, of the movable handle-member, having an automatic endwise adjustment on its pivot, the holder, seated on said frame and pivoted to said handle-member, the cuttingblade, fixed in said holder and projecting down along the inner edge of said frame, and the guide-pins, inserted in the outer corners IOO of the holder and engaging with the eorreloosely secured to the movable handle, and spending edge of said fra1ne,snbstantially as the guide-linger, inserted in said handle and ro and for the purpose set forth. bearing against the underside of said frame,
3. In a can-opener, the combination with substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5 the frame, provided with holding-lugs on the WASHINGTON L. SCOVILLE.
underside and Iche integral handle part, of the Witnesses: movable slotted handle, having an endwise L. M. FREEMAN,
movement on its pivot, the cuting-blade, J. B. DONALSON.
