INVENTOR James J 5/7150 ATTORNEYS UMTED srn rns PATENT OFFICE,
JAMES J. SNIGO, OF PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
RECEPTACLE.
Application filed July 6, 1915, Serial No. 38,310.
To all whom it may concern:
l 3e it known that I, JAMES J. SNIGO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certam new'and useful Improvements in Receptacles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to.receptacles, more the cover.
A further object of the invention is to provide a can body, in a manner as hereinafter set forth with a reinforcement at the mouth end of the can, said reinforcement being formed from the marginal part of the can body at said end and having oppositely disposed coupling elements capable of engaging with the lid or cover whereby the latter can be detachably connected with the can body in a manner so that by gripping the cover with one hand the can can be shifted from point to point.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a receptacle for the purpose set forth which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong,-durable, efficient and convenient in its use, and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein, is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be under stood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is an elevation, broken away, and in section of a receptacle in accordance with this invention, the cover being spaced from the body.
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view, broken away, of 'a receptacle in accordance with this invention, the cover being spaced from the body.
Specification of'Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 20, 1917. Renewed October 18, 1916. Serial No. 126,460.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, broken away, of a body portion of the receptacle and further illustrated in dotted lines the marginal part of the body portion prior to the bending of said marginal part to the position shown in full lines in said figure.
By way ofexample the adaptation of the invention is illustrated in accordance with an ice cream can and referring to the drawings in detail 1 denotes the cylindrical body portion of the can and 2, in dotted lines, the marginal part of said body portion 1, prior to the bending of said marginal part.
The marginal part 2 is bent outward to surround the body portion 1 to provide a reinforcing collar 3, anda thickened rounded edge 4. The marginal part 2 is inset as at 5, near its free edge, so that when. the marginal part 2 is bent to provide the collar 3, a peripheral rib 6 isformed, which not only reinforces the collar 3, but provides a stop for' the lid or cover to be presently referred to.
The marginal part 2 has a pair of countersunk openings and the counter-sinks of said openings arearranged at the outer side of said marginal part 2 and seated in said openings 7 are a pair of headed coupling elements 8, the heads 9 of said elements being seated in the counter-sinks whereby when the marginal part 2 is bent to set up a collar 3, the coupling elements 8 project outwardly and although said coupling elements are illustrated in the form of a rivet and tapped so as to fixedly secure them to the marginal part 2, other forms can be employed, yet when the collar 3 is set up, the bodyportion 1 will arrest any inward shifting movement of the. coupling elements 8 if they should become loose.
When the marginal part 2 is bent to provide a collar 3, it snugly engages the outer face of the body portion 1 and is secured to said body portion. The collar 3 may -be secured by means of rivets but preferably it is spot welded.
The reference character 10 denotes a lid or cover with the lower edges thereof flared as at 11. To provide for the connecting of the lidor cover 10 with the body portion 1, through the medium of coupling elements 8, the lidror cover 10 is offset toprovide a pair of diametrically opposed angle-shape grooves 12 to receive the coupling elements 8. In lieu of forming the lid or cover 10 with grooves 12 it is obvious that angleshape slots can be provided or any form of cam slots or grooves. The lid or cover 10 has attached thereto a handle 13.
In securing the lid or cover 10 with the body portion 1, the grooves 12 of the lid or cover 10, are adapted to fit down through the coupling elements 8, after which the lid or cover 10 is partially rotated so that the coupling elements 8 will engage in the horizontal portions of the grooves 12, and under such conditions thelid or cover will be prevented from being raised or removed from the body portion 1, unless the lid or cover 10 is shifted in a reversed direction.
Vhat I claim is 1. A receptacle comprising a body portio having the marginal part throughout at one end bent outwardly to surround and snugly engage said body portion thereby providing an integral reinforcing collar for said end, said collar having inherent means near its free edge to form a peripheral rib for said body portion, said collar having a pair of diametrically opposed countersunk openings, and a pair of cover attaching elements extending through said openings and projecting outwardly from said collar and provided with heads tapped in said openings, said heads opposing said body portion.
2. A receptacle comprising a body portion having the marginal part throughout at one end bent outwardly to surround and snugly engage said body portion thereby providing an integral reinforcing collar for said end, said collar having inherent means near its free edge to form a peripheral rib for said body portion, said collar having a pair of diametrically opposed countersunk openings, and a pair of cover attaching elements extending through said openings and projecting outwardly fromsaid collar and provided with heads tapped insaid openings, said heads opposing said body portion, and said rib being substantially semi-circular in cross section. V
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
