COMBINATION CAN-COVER LoosE vEa Ann DOPE-PADDLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 21,1916.
Application filed June 18, 1915. Serial No. 34,905. v
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, Lns'rnn MARLATT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Atchison, in the county of Atchison and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Can-Cover Looseners and Dope-Paddles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates broadly to can at tachments and more specifically to a combination can cover loosener and dope paddle.
The primary object of my invention resides in the provision of an implement slidably associated with the cover of a recep-- tacle, the cover being loosened when the implement is removed from the receptacle, the said implement also serving as a dope paddle for cleaning the can thoroughly of its contents.
Another object of my invention resides in the construction of an implement, the handle portion thereof peculiarly formed to facilitate the handling of the implement as well as the removal of a cover from a can.
A still further object of my invention resides in the provision of a device of the.
character described that is simple in construction, efficient in operation and one that can be manufactured and placed on the market at a minimum cost.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of my invention will be more readily understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a fragmentary side elevational view of a can and cover therefor, illustrating to advantage the arrangement of my invention therewith; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1 illustrating to advantage the positioning of the implement when the cover is in closed position on the can body; Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1, illustrating to advantage the construction of the implementg and Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line li of Fig. 3 in the direction in which the arrow points.
Referring more particularly to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate like orcorresponding parts throughout the different views, I provide a can or other cylindrical and preferably metallic receptacle 1 with an outwardly eX- tending annular rib 2, formed by depressing the inner periphery of the can body, the saidrib serving as an abutment for the circular flange 3 of the cover l. The flange is provided with a horizontal slot 5 at a point slightly beneath the top ofethe cover, the under surface ofthe latter serving as one longitudinal edge of the slot as clearly illus- 1 of the accompanying draw trated in Fig. ings for a purpose to be hereinafter referred to.
For the on the body as well as providing an efficient means for facilitating the cleaning of the contents of the can body, I h ve provided my improved combined can cover loosener and dope paddle, in this instance including a body 6 formed from a single piece of material having one end thereof enlarged to provide a paddle 7 of-a width thereof will lie in intimate contact with the' under surface of the top of the cover, the knob 9 limiting the inward movement of the combined implement on the cover. cover 4 is now placed upon the can until the lower end of the flange engages the rib 2 and until the under surface of thehandle 8 engages the upper edge'of the can body 1, thus positioning the ribs 11 within the plane of the periphery of the can and in a plane beneath the plane of'the upper'edge of the can body. It is also to be noted that when in this position the outer edge of the ribs 11 is arranged in a plane'in alinement with the plane of the lower-edge of the horizontal slot 5, this being necessary to permit of the raising of the cover a slight extent when the ribs engage the upper edge of the can body. t
The operation of my invention is as folpurpose of loosening the cover rolled upon itself to" The.
lows: When it is desired to remove the can cover 4: from the can body 1, the circular knob 9 is engaged and pulled outwardly through the horizontal slot 5, whereupon the lower curved edges of the horizontally arranged ribs will ride upon the upper edge of the can body, consequently causing the can cover to move upwardly a slight extent. This movement of the cover naturally loosens the latter and permits of the easy removal of the same after the combined dope paddle and remover has been removed. The handle can now be engaged and the implement used in the ordinary manner for disensing the contents of the can.
Although I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, I desire to be understood that I 'am not to be limited to the exact details shown, however, I desire that great stress be laid upon the arrangement of the combined can cover loosener and dope paddle formed from a single piece of material and removably associated with the can and its cover by the mere provision of the horizontal slot in the cover.
From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it can easily be seen that I have provided a device that is simple in construction containing but a few simple parts that can be cheaply manufactured and assembled and when assembled can be placed upon the market and sold at a minimum cost.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for It will be understood that the above dcscription and accompanying drawings comprehend only the general embodiment of my invention and that various minor changes in detail of construction, proportion and arrangement of the parts may the scope of the appended claim and without sacrificing invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to se cure by Letters Patent, is:
The combination with a can body, a cover therefor having a horizontal slot positioned adjacent the top of the cover, of an implement formed from a single piece of metal slidably mounted in said slot and normally arranged in intimate contact with the under surface of the cover and the upper edge of the can body when the cover is in position,
and a handle for facilitating the removal of the implement from the cover and provided with spaced longitudinal ribs having curved outer surfaces for engagement with the upper edge of the can body for forcing the cover from engagement therewith when the implement is being removed.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses. V
LESTER MARLATT.
