TIN -BOX OPENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 30, 1913.
Application led February 27, 1913. Serial N o. 751,115.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ETIENNE MARCEL DARQU, a citizen of the French Republic, and resident at Clichy, France, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in and Relating to Tin-Box Openers.
This present invention relates to tin-box openers and more particularly to a device of this kind, whereina cutter or knife is fastened to a shank by means of a hinge, said cutter being movable into its operative position for use of the device and collapsible into inoperative position when the device is not in use. i y
The object of the invention is to provide a tin-box opener which may be conveniently placed in xthe operators pocket, without danger of injury.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 shows thel cutter or knife of the opener in side elevation; Fig. 2 is theshank or handle in sideelevation; Fig. 3 is a top plan view showing the device in its collapsed position; Fig. 4 is a perspective view showing the manner of using the device. l y
The essential features ofthe invention consist of thebeak-shaped cutter 1, having a slot 2 formed therein and adapted to be engaged by the tongue 3 of the handle 4. Said tongue is curved like a pintle of a hinge around the pin 5 formedby .the slot 2, so
that the cutter 1 may-be collapsed upon the flat handle 4 whenthe device is not in use, in order to enable the device to be placed in the pocket. If the device is to be used the knife or cutter 1 will be turned to its o eravtive position and the point thereof w11 be forced into the cover of the box. Now the cutter is raised by means of the handle, the hinge of the latter resting upon the edge of the box whereby the handle works like a lever. Of course the hinge may be provided with a special guiding device, adapted to slide along the edge of the box.
I claim: y
1. A can opener comprising a substantially rectangular `Hat handle provided with a sleeve` extending longitudinally of one edge, and a cutter blade pivotall mounted in said sleeve and `adapted to lie at against said handle when in inoperative position.
2. A can opener comprising a handle member consisting of a single metallicbplate provided with a substantially rectangular body portion and a portion projecting from one side and rolled to form a sleeve, and a semi-lunate blade member provided with a slot wherethrough the projecting portion of the handle member passes and pivot-ally connecting the handle and blade, said sleeve lying wholly to one side of the handle member whereby the blade may be folded flat against the handle when not in use. y
In testimony whereof I havehereunto set' my hand in presence of two witnesses.
ETIENNE MARCEL DARQUE.
