To all 'whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN C. PETTIBONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Ansonia, county of New Haven, State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Nail-Clipper and Cigar-Cutter, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to pocket implements capable of being used for a variety of purposes, and has particular reference to such devices used for clipping and cleaning the finger nails.

One of the objects of this invention is to provide a device of the character stated, which shall combine means for cutting cigar tips with means for clipping the finger nails.

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated, having means for locking the jaws or members closed, so that the device will occupy the least possible space in the pocket. A

Another object of the invention is to provide a device of the character stated, which shall be simple, durable and inexpensive, all as will be more fully described hereinafter.

To these ends the invention consists in the construction and combination of parts substantially as hereinafter described and claimed.

Of the accompanying drawing z-Figure 1 is a plan view of a device embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view from the other side of the device. Fig. 5 represents a longitudinal section of the device, the two members being locked in closed position and showing a modified form of spring.

The implement comprises two main members 10 and 11 pivoted together as at 12. For convenience of description, the member 10 will be hereinafter referred to as the upper member, and the member 11 as the lower member. As a matter of fact, however, the implement may be used with either member uppermost according to the convenience of the owner.

Each member is preferably formed of sheet metal pressed to form flanges, which iian es provide cutting portions and the supports or Fig. 4 reprethe ivot 12 and also the locking recesses hereinafter described.

At one edge of the implement, portions of the flanges are curved and sharpened. and formed to meet so as to form nail clipper jaws 13. The iianges at the opposite edge of the implement are formed to overlap and provided with curved shearing portions to form the cigar cutter jaws 14.

The flanges of the upper member are notched or recessed, as at 15, (see Fig. 4), and the flanges of the lower member are notched or recessed as at 16. When the two members are closed to the position shown in Figs. 3 and 5, the notches or recesses 15, 16 register or are in alinement.

A slide 17 is mounted in the upper member and is formed with locking lugs or dogs 18 adapted to enter the notches or recesses 15, 16, when the latter are in alinement, so as -to hold the'two members of the implement locked in the closed position, as shown in Fig. 3. Said slide is mainly held in its position in the upper member by a button 19 the shank of which passes through a slot 2O in said upper member and is riveted or otherwise secured to the slide. Said button holds the slide in place and serves also as the means by which the user may project or retract the slide. Preferably one end of the slide is elongated and formed with a pointed tip to constitute a nail cleaner 21 which may be projected through a hole or recess 22 in the end of the member 10.

Fig. 1 shows the nail cleaner and slide retracted, and Fig. 4 shows it as projected.

For convenience in operating the cutting jaws of the two members, they should be normally open or thrown apart by a spring, so that the user will only have to close the member when using the implement. As indicated in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, said spring may comprise an integral portion 23 of the lower member, said portion being curved upward and over and bearing upon the upper surface of the upper member back of the pivotal point. To reduce the strength of the spring thus formed, the tongue of metal which forms it is preferably cut out centrally, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

As shown in Fig. 5, the spring may comprise a wire 24 coiled around the pivot pin 12 and having its ends bearing against the inner faces of the two members of the implement. One or both of the outer faces of the two members may be grooved and roughened, as indicated at in Fig. 2, to constitute nail iiling portions.

When the implement is to be employed either in. clipping nails or for cutting the tip of a cigar, the user will simply press against the button 19 so as to shift it and the locking slide in a direction away from the hinge or pivoted point of the two members of the implement. This unlocks the two members and the spring will throw them apart to the position shown in Fig. 4. The user will simply press the two members together in the manner of ordinary spring pliers so as to cut `whatever is to be operated upon by the jaws of the implement. While the slide is in the projected position mentioned, the nail cleaner 21 may be used either while the spring is holding the members apart or while said members are held pressed together by the ngers of the user.

Having now described my invention I claim:

1. An implement of the character described comprising cutting jaws pivotally connected, a spring for normally o ening said jaws, said jaws having side anges formed with recesses adapted to register when the jaws are closed, and a slide having lugs to engage said recesses to hold the jaws closed.

2. An implement of the character described comprising two members pivoted together and each formed with flanges, portions of said flanges being formed as cutters, said flanges having notches or recesses adapted to register when the members are closed, and a slide having lugs adapted to engage said recesses.

3. An implement of the characterl described comprising two members pivoted together and each formed with flanges, portions of said flanges being formed as cutters, said fianges having notches or recesses adapted to register when the members are closed, and a slide having lugs adapted to engage said recesses, the said lslide being formed with a pointed outer end to form a nail cleaner.
