Description

P. IOHNSON.
SCISSORS ATTACHMENT.
APPLICATION FILE-D MAY 25. 1920.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920;,
ITED 'l' SGISSORS ATTACHMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 28, 1920.
Application filed May 25, 1920. Serial No. 384,014.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PETER JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Highland Station, Minnea olis, in the county of .Hennepin, State of innesota, have invented a new and useful Scissors Attachment; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to attachments for scissors and has for its object to provide in the upper edge of one of the blades a pivoted knife, which knife is substantially centrally pivoted in an elongated aperture so that the cutting edge of the knife blade, or the back of the knife blade, may be dis posed outwardly so that the scissors may be used in connection with the knife for ripping and cutting, thereby providing a ripping knife in connection with a pair of scissors so that the same can be instantly used as desired.
A further object is to provide a lug on the free end of the knife blade adjacent its back, which lug engages shoulders at the ends of the recess in the scissors blade for limiting the movement in either its open or closed position. Also to provide movable members for holding the blade in its open or closed position.
With the above and other objects in view the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth, shown in the drawings, described, and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention may be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the in vention.
In the drawings Figure l is a side elevation of a conventional form of scissors, showing the ripping knife attachment carried thereby;
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail view of a portion of the knife-carrying blade, part being broken away to better illustrate the structure Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the knife-carrying blade;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the slidable knife-holding member.
Referring to the drawings, the numerals 1 and 2 designate conventional forms of cooperating scissors blades, which blades are pivotally connected together as at 3 and have their ends terminating in finger-engag ing loops 4. Blade 2 on its upper edge is provided with an elongated recess 5, the ends of which are provided with shoulders 6 and Pivotally mounted in the recess 5 as at 8 at a point intermediate or substantially centrally of the recess 5 is a ripping blade 9, the outer end of which blade is provided with a lug 10, which lug is adjacent the back 11 of the blade. Lug 10 is so positioned that when the blade 9 is in closed position as shown in Fig. 1, said lug will engage the shoulder 6 so that the blade will be limited in its downward movement and the cutting edge 12 prevented from coming into contact with the bottom of the recess 5, consequently dulling or turning the edge 12.
Pivotally mounted on the upper edge of the blade 2 as at 13 is a spring clip 14, which clip when the blade 9 is in closed position engages the upper edge of the lug 10 thereby holding the blade in closed position when not in use. Spring clip 14 when pushed to one side allows the operator to place the finger nail in the nail-engaging slot so that the ripping blade 9 may be pulled outwardly and the blade positioned as shown in Fig. 2 with its lug 10 in engagement with the shoulder 7, at which time the slidable plate 16 is moved toward the blade-until its end engages over the lug 10 of said blade, thereby holding the blade in its open position. Slidable plate 16 has a slot and headed lug connection 17 with the scissors blade 2 and is frictionally held against displacement by means of a leaf-spring 18 which engages its upper surface.
When the blade is in the position shown in Fig. 2 it will be seen that it may be used for ripping purposes, or for any other purpose incident to sewing or tailoring where a keen sharp edge is necessary. Pfowever, the attachment is primarily designed for ripping and to obviate the common present practice of ripping with a. separate knife or with a safety razor blade.
From the above it will be seen that a knife attachment is provided for use in connection with a pair of scissors, which knife is carried in one of the blades of the scissors, and so carried and mounted therein that itcan be easily and quickly positioned with its cutting edge upwardly where it can be used for ripping purposes.
The invention having been set forth what is claimed as new and useful is 1. The combination with a scissors blade, of a ripping knife blade carried thereby, said ripping knife blade being pivotally mounted substantially centrally of an elongated recess in the back of the scissors blade, a lug carried by the ripping blade adjacent its back, stops in the ends of the recess for engaging the lug carried by the ripping blade and limiting the downward movement of said blade, and movable members carried by the scissors blade for engaging the lug of the ripping blade for holding said lug in engagement with the shoulders .in the ends of the recess, thereby holding the blade in open, or closed position.
V 2. The combination with a scissors blade, of a ripping knife carried thereby, said ripping knife being pivotally mounted substantially centrally of an elongated recess in the back of the scissors blade, shoulders in the ends of the elongated recess, a by the end of the ripping knife and adapted to engage said shoulders when the ripping knife is in closed or open position, and spring-actuated members carried by the back of the scissors blade for engaging the lug carried by the ripping knife and holding said lug in engagement with the shoulders in the ends of the elongated recess, thereby holding said ripping knife in closed or open position. i P
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
