Description
Patented lli/lar, 2i?, '1925,
MARGERTLTE 1E. HULL, 0F FURTLAND, OREGON.
KNIFE.
Application flied October 18, 1921. Serial io. 508,541.
To all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, MARGUnRrrn E. HULL,'.
a citizen of thellnited Sta-tes, residing at Portland, in the county of Multnomah and t State of Oregon, have invented new and useful improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my said invention is the pro vision of a knife, designed more especially, 1u though not necessarily, for ripping purposes, and characterized by coinpactness, simplicity and strength in construction and by the capacity to positively and strongly lock the blade in advanced and working po- )le tion and also in retracted and idle and adequately guarded position.
Tothe attainment of 'the foregoing, the invention consists in the improvement as hereinafter described and definitely claimed.
ln the accompanying drawings, forming l part of this specication Figure 1 is a side elevation of the kn'ife as reduced to practice and successfully used by me.
Figure 2 is a front end elevation of the saine.
Figure 3 is a top plan view of the knife.
Figure 4f is an enlarged transverse section taken in the plane indicated by the line 4 4 au of Figure 3.
Figure 5 is a longitudinal section taken in the plane indicated by the line 5,-5 of Figure 1. 'i v Figure 6 is an enlarged detail longitudinal section taken on the line 6 6 of Figure 3 and showing the manner in which the blade is secured lin its advanced and work ing position.
Figure 7 is a` section showing the knife as it appears when its handle section 1 is re moved.
Similar numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the views of the drawin s. l
The handle of my novel knife may be made of any material compatible with its purpose, and in the present embodiment the handle is composed of two side by side sections 1 and 2, the said sections being riveted together at 3 or otherwise connected in any appropriate manner. The meeting sides of the sections '1 and 2 are recessed as indicated by 4 in Figures i andy 5, and in the forward opposed portions of the members l1 and 2 t5" are formed channels 5 'to guide the blade 6 and to guard the forward end of the blade` when the blade is retracted as shown in Figure 7. In the handle section 1 and extending throughout the thickness thereofis a longitudinal slot 8 having adjacent to its 00 ends lateral offsets or seats 9. The handle is further provided by preference with a ring 10, This, however, is not ofthe essence of my invention, and therefore the ring 10 may be employed or may be altogether omitted without affecting my invention as claimed.
As appears in Figure- 5 and also in Figure 7 the'blade 6 is formed of a strap of appropriate metal or other material possessed of resiliency and so arranged that its rear portion tends to spring in the direction indicated by the large arrow in Figure 5. On .the rear portion of the spring 6 is a finger piece 11, carried by a shank 12 that extends laterally outward from the sprin 6 and through the slot 8, and on the said shank 12 is a lug 13, best shown in- Figures 4L, 5 and 6, the said lug 13 being arranged inwardly from and in spaced relation to the finger or thumbpiece 11,- and being adapted when the blade 6 is retracted to snap into the rear offset or seat 9, and when the blade is projected, to snap into the forward ed set or seat 9. The lug 13 will snap or be moved into the offsets 9 by the resiliency of the rear portion of the blade and will be securely maintained against casual release from the offsets by the said resiliency of the blade portion. When, however, the blade is in projected position as appears in Figures 1, 3 and 5 and it is desired to retract the blade so as to completely sheath the same in the handle it is simply necessary for the operator to exert inward pressure on the finger or thumb piece, 11 so as to move thelug 13 inwardly from the forward offset 9 and then by longitudinal movement of the finger piece 11 to draw the blade into the handle. When the luv 13 reaches a l0@ position opposite 'the rear offset 9 and pressure is removed from the linger piece 11, the spring portion of the blade will operate to seat the lug 13 in the rear offset 9 with the result that the blade will be strongly and 105 positively secured entirel within the handle. When it is desire to project Ythe blade it is simply necessary for the ope-rator to unseat the lug 13 from the rear offset 9 and move the blade forwardly and, 110
then release the finger or thumb piece 11 when the lug 13 Will be seated in the for- Ward offset 9 of the handle.
The blade 6 may be of any approved type Without affecting my invention. In. the illustrated embodiment, however, the for- Ward end of the blade comprises a portion 14 with a rounded sharpened edge 15, and a point 16 referably sharpened at its inner edge an extending forwardly iush with the edge of the blade remote from the edge from which the rounded portion 14 eX- tends. Manifestly in the use of my novel device the point 16 is adapted to be used in starting a ripping operation, after which the said operation may be quickly completed by the use of the rounded and sharpened portion 14.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment'. I do -not desire, however, to be understood as confinlng myself to the said specific construction and relative arrangement of partev inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may be made such as fall within the scope nf my invention as defined in my appended claim,
Having described my invention, what, I. claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1s A knife comprising a handle having in one of its sides a longitudinal slot and an offset or seat in communication With said slot, and a blade movable rectilinearly in the handle and having an integral resilient; rear portion that is laterally deflected from the line of its forward portion and is movable rectilinearly with said forward portion and is also movable laterally, and means on the said resilient rear portion of the blade, movable in the lon gitudinal slot o f the handle and carryin a lug movable into and out of the said o set or seat and yieldingly maintained in the offset or seat by the lateral deflection and resilient of the rear portion of the blade.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
MARGUERITE E. HULL.
