Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 9, 1915.
Application filed September 17, 1914. I Serial No. 862,216.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN G. FRIBERG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Maiden Rock, in the county of Pierce and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Pail-Covers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in'covers for pails, kettles and the like and more particularly to an ad justable cover therefor and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which may be readily adjusted to various sizes whereby the same may be applied to pails and kettles of various sizes.
A further object of the invention resides in providing a member in connection with this adjustable pail'cover which is designed to receive a particularly constructed additional member such as a strainer, and a still further object resides in providing an improved locking means for the cover which is designed to retain the various parts of the device in assembled position.
A still further object resides in providing a device which is simple and durable in construction, inexpensive to manufacture and one which will be very efficient and useful in operation.
With these and other objects in View the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this application :Figure 1 is a plan view of a device constructed in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof; Fig. 3 is a rearelevation of the same; Fig. 4c is a transverse section as seen on line le-4 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow; Fig. 5 is a bottom plan view of the device; Fig. 6 is a vertical section through a pail having a cover applied thereto constructed in accordance with my invention and disclosing in elevation a strainer applied in connection with the cover; Fig. 7 is a detail perspective view of one of the locking members for the device; and Fig. 8 is a plan view of a slightly modified form of the invention.
In describing the invention I shall refer to the drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which 1 designates a pail or kettle of any desired shape and size to which is adapted to be applied my improved adjustable cover. This cover consists of a substantially circular base plate 2 formed of two sections 3 and 4 which are pivoted as indicated at 5 to a linking strip or plate 6. The meeting edges of said sections 3 and i at the pivotal ends thereof are cut away as shown at 7 whereby to permit said sections to be swung outwardly or inwardly with respect to one,
another to expand the cover. These sections of the covering plate 2 are formed of thin metal and are permitted to slightly overlap so that the same may be readily swung inwardly when desired. In order to limit the expansive movement of said members with respect to one another, said sections are provided at the edges thereof diametrlcally opposite the pivotal points with laterally extending lugs 8 which are designed to abut one another when the meeting edges of said sections register one with the other, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
The link or the like 6 to which the sections 3 and 4: are pivotally connected is provided with a depending lug or flange 9 while the sections 3 and i at points diametrically opposite one another and midway between the pivotal and free ends of the same are provided with depending lugs or flanges 10. The flanges 9 and 10 are adapted to project downwardly and engage the body or upper peripheral edge of the pail when the plate 2 is appliedto the latter. It will be appreciated from the construction above described and shown in the drawings that this member 2 may be applied to pails or kettles of various sizes, the same being adjustable to clamp tightly around the upper edge of any receptacle to which the same is applied. In order to lock the sections of this plate 2 in any adjusted position with respect to one another, each section thereof is provided with a locking strap or link 11 which is pivoted at its one end at a point on the upper face of the section at a point substantially diametrically opposite 5 the pivotal point of the section. The free end of each strap is provided with an upwardly bent lug 12 which forms a finger position of said sections these straps may be disposed so that the teeth thereof interlock and thus positively secure said sections in their adjusted positions. These members 11 may be readily disengaged when it is desired to adjust or remove the plate 2 from its position on the receptacle.
The meeting edge of each of the sections 3 and 4 is cut away about centrally whereby to form an enlarged opening 14 in the member 2. Applied to the top face of this plate 2 is an additional plate 15 which is formed somewhat on the order of a strip being narrow at its ends and enlarged centrally as shown at 16-. The enlarged central portion of the strip or plate 15 has a polygonal central opening 17 therein which may be of any design but which in the drawing is shown octagonal. The edges of the walls of this opening are provided with depending flanges 18. The onenarrow end of this strip or plate 15 is designed to be received in frictional engagement between the faces of the sections 3 and 4 and the link-like plate 6, as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings and when so disposed this strip or plate 15 will extend diametrically across the plate 2. The opening 17 in the member 15 is preferably smaller than the opening 14 in the plate 2 and will be disposed substantially within the latter. The plate or strip 15 is provided on its upper face adjacent its free end with an upstanding projection 19 which is designed to form a finger piece but which also cooperates with the teeth of the members 11 whe cby to lock this member.l5 in position in the plate 2. The projection 19 also affords a means for engagement with the teeth 13 of said members 11 so that when this plate 15 is applied the teeth of the members 11 do not necessarily engage one another. It is obvious, therefore, that this projection 19 performs a double function in afi'ording a finger or lifting piece for the member 15 gaged therewith for locking the parts in their proper positions with respect to one another.
The opening 17 is of polygonal design in order to receive therein a particularly de signed depending. portion of an improved funnel 20 which is specifically described and claimed in my concurrently filed application. As shown in the drawings,'this particularly constructed portion of the funnel is joc'tagonail in design but it will be understood that the same may be of any desired shape and of a course the opening 17 in the member 15 will be designed to correspond therewith.
Thls adjustable top may of course be used in other connections than that described for the purpose of supporting the funnel, in V fact, it may be used as an ordinary top for the receptacle. When the funnel is not in use a covering'means'for the opening 17 is provided. This covering means consists of a pair of semi-circular plates 21 which are pivoted as shown at 22 to the upper face of the strip or plate 15 on'one side of the opening 17. When it is desired to use the funnel in connection with this top, these plates are disposed to their outward or extended posi tions, as shown in Fig.1 of the drawings but when said funnel is not in use these plates are disposed to their closed position as shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings.
'In Fig; 8 I have shown a' slightly modified' form of the invention wherein an adjustable pail cover is provided for use on and application to a pail or the like without the use of the strainer and its adjunctive parts. In this form of the invention a pail cover 28 is provided the same consisting of a pair of semi-clrcular sections 2'4 and 25 which are pivoted together at a pointindi cated as 26 to permit the straight inner edges to overlap one another. The peripheral edges of the sections 24 and :25 are provided at predetermined points thereon with in tegral depending lugs 27 which are similar to the lugs 9 and 10 inthe first mentioned so that same may be used in connection with any kettle, pail or the like for the same purpose as the ordinary pail cover. In view of the adjustability of this cover, however, the same may be applied to use in connection with pails or receptacles of various sizes. In
order to lock the sections of the coverinthe positions to which the same are adjusted, a pair of pivotal locking arms are provided, one being carried on each section as arethe arms 11 of the first mentioned form. The
free ends of these locking arms overlap one another and are provided with locking teeth for engagement with one another the same as the locking arms 11 heretofore described.
From the foregoing description of the construction of my improved device the manner of applying the same to use and the operation thereof will be readily understood and it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive and efficient means for carrying out the objects of my invention.
While I have particularly described the elements best adapted to perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and in the minor details of construction may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A device of the class described comprising a pair of plate sections movable toward and from each other and adapted to overlap, the meeting edges of said sections being cut away centrally to provide a central opening therebetween, and a member applied to the upper face of said sections having a central aperture therein to aline with the aforesaid opening.
2. A device of the class described comprising a pair of pivoted plate sections adapted to overlap one another, means for limiting the expansive movement of said sections with respect to one another, depending lugs formed on said sections to provide gripping members thereon, the meeting edges of said sections being cut away centrally to provide a central opening therebetween, a member applied to the up per face of said sections and also having a central opening therein alining with the aforesaid opening, means for locking the plate sections in various adjusted positions and simultaneously locking said member in position thereon.
3. A device of the class described comprising a pair of plate like sections pivoted together and having their meeting edges cut away centrally to provide an opening therebetween, a member applied to the upper face of said sections also having a central opening therein alining with the aforesaid opening, covering means for said openings and locking strips carried on the sections adapted for engagement with one another to secure said sections in various adjusted positions.
