COMBINED LID AND LIFTING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 6, 1910.
Application filed May 10, 1910. Serial No. 560,598.
Lids and Lifting Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object to provide an improved lid for pans, pots, kettles and similar cooking or other vessels, and which is so constructed that it may also be employed for lifting and carrying the vessel.
The invention also has for its object to provide a device of the kind stated which is simple in construction, and which can be readily applied to, or removed from the ves sel. and which will securely hold the same.
Another object of the invention is to provide a lid and litter which can be applied to vessels having a bail or handle.
lYith these objects in view, the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed. reference being had to the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of the device. Fig. 2 is a transverse section of the device and. the vessel to which it is applied. Fig. 3 is an edge view of the device removed from the vessel.
As shown in the drawing, the device comprises two hinged sections 5 and 6, respectively, which, when they are brought together or closed up, form a substantially circular plate, the sections being so dimensioned that their meeting edges are off to one side of the center of the plate. At the outer edge or margin of each section is a downwardly extending flange T which is formed with an inner marginal bead 8, which bead is for a purpose to be presently described.
On one end of the section 5 is an outwardly projecting ear 9, and from the section 6 extends outwardly a finger 10 having a lateral bend in the direction of, and overlapping the ear, the lapping parts having registering openings through Wl11Cl1 passes loosely a rivet 11, whereby a hinge joint between the sections is made. The lateral bend of the finger is spaced from the edge of the section 6, the slot 12 thus had being for a purpose to be presently made clear.
The ends of the sections 5 and 6 opposite the hinge have handles 13 which come together when thesections are closed, the contiguous edges of the handles being in line with the meeting edges of the sections. In the edge of the handle of the section 6 is a slot 13 The flange 7 of the section 5, at a point midway between its ends, has an aperture 1 1, and diametrically opposite the same, the section 6 has, adjacent to its edge, a series of perforations 15 to form a strainer. The
perforated portion is slightly widened so as to extend beyond the acjacent edge of the section 6, which is for the purpose of enabling it to cover the pouring lip of the vessel.
The device is applied to the vessel 16 by spreading the sections 5 and 6 as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1, suiticiently so that the flanges 7 may encircle the top portion of the vessel exteriorly, the bead 8 being positioned so as to lie below the head 17 at the top edge of the vessel. The bailears 18 extend through the slots 12 and 13 which brings the bail 19 above the sections, and the latter may now be closed up by means of the handles 13, so that the flanges tightly grip the vessel, and the latter may now be lifted and carried about without danger of dropping. The flanges encircle the vessel so that a secure hold may be taken, and the beads 8 and 17 prevent the vessel from slipping down. The liquid contents of the vessel may be poured out of the same through the perforations 15, by tilting the vessel, which can be readily done by means of the handles 13, without releasing the hold on the vessel. It the device is to be applied to a vessel having a handle instead of a hail, the handle is passed through the aperture 14. By dimensioning the sections 5 and 6 so that their meeting edges are off to one side of the center, the slots 12 and 13 may be correctly po sitioned diametrically opposite each other to accommodate the bail ears as described.
The device will be manufactured in various sizes to suit different sized vessels, but the arrangement of the slots to receive the bail ears and handle adapts a device of a certain size to different styles of pots, pans, kettles and other vessels of corresponding s1ze.
I claim 2- A combined lid and lifting-device comprising hinged sections forming a substantially circular plate when closed, and the sections having their meeting edges olt to one side of the center, an ear projecting from sweets one of the sections, a finger projecting from the other section and spaced therefrom, whereby a slot is formed to receive one 01" the bail ears of a vessel, a pivotal connection between the ear and the finger to form the hinge joint between the sections, de pending marginal flanges on the sections, and handles on the sections, one of said handles having a slot in its inner edge Which is dliznnetrically opposite the aforesaid fin- 1e ger, and receives the other bail ear.
In testnnony whereof l aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
MATTHIElV B. BLAKE.
