Description

J. W. ROCKWELL.
HOLDER FOR BOX LIDS, SASHES, AND THE LIKE. APPLICATION men MAY n. 1915.
1 168,1 12.. Patented Jan. 11, 1916.

iects of the invention JOHN w. ROCKWELL, or wnYNEsBoRo, PENNSYLVANIA.
HOLDER BOX-LIDS, SASHES, AND THE LIKE.
To aZZu-lmm it may concern Be it known that. I, JOHNWL' RoomvnL'n, States, residing at: aynesboro, 1n the county of Franklin and a citizen of the United State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new anduseful Holder for-BomLids, Sashes, and
the like, of which the following is a specifi cation. V
This invention relates to holclers"clesigned for use in connection with hinged box lids, sashes and like structures, one of the obbeing to provide a holder which will support'the lid or other hinged structure in an elevated position. it being possible to shift the holder so as to release the supported structure and permit it to be lowered, the entire operation of raising the hinged structure to its open position and of releasing said structure and lowering it being performed. if desired, with one hand and without the necessity of touching the support or holder.
With the foregoing and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds. the invention l'tSldC-S in the combination and arrangement of nuts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed. it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed. can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the inventiton has been shown. v
In said drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of abox the lid of which is provided with a holder such as constitutes the present invention, said lid being shown in closed position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the lid held in open position. Fig. 3 is a. side elevation of a portion of the holder showing the relative positions of the parts after said holder has been shifted to permit lowering of the cover. Fig. 4 is an enlarged section on line AB Fig. 2.
Referring to the figures by characters of reference 1 designates a box having a hinged cover 2 and pivotally connected to the cover is a slide 3 which can be of any desired shape and size. said slide being provided with a longitudinal slot 4. The upper wall of the slot is formed with a series of notches these notches being preferably located ads jacent that end of the slot nearest the tree the middle vided with cured the middle portion of 8 supported within the middle portion of Specification of Letters Patent. Pat ent-9d Jain. 12, 1916. 1 Application filed May 1;, 1915. Serial No. 27,376 i v 7 portion of the slot andlispro-v a. central -stud 7 to which is sea, a dividing strip 1.
the slot -1 and having oppositely extending,
spring fingers 9 and 10. freecndportion curvedupwardly and normally pressing again'st'the upper wall of the slot. l close" to the free end of the strip 3, while the finger 9 beats vieldingly against the bottofmavall of'the slot 4 near the other end thereof. A stud 11 extends laterally from the box 1 and is fixed relative thereto, this stud projecting into the slot 4 and. be ing of such size as to pass readily lZPiIWQEZl the dividing strip 8 and the walls of the slot l. llhen the cover is in closed position, stud 11. is located inone end portion oi the slot 4. When cover 2 is moved to open Finger 10 has its position. the strip 3 is drawn along the sin-J.
up against the top wall of the slot .r so that by now lowering thecover 2. the stud will be received between finger l0 and the bottom wall of slot 4. During the lowering of the cover, the strip 8 will pass over the stud and the finger 9 will come against and ride over said stud until the stud finally assumes a position in that end of he slot 4 nearest the pivot of the strip 3 and as illus trated in 1.
While the improvements have been shown and described applied to a box and its lid, it is to be understood that they can also be used in connection with an structure which is hingedlv mounted and which'it is desired to hold in an open position. For example. sashes. slqlights and the like can'he provided with a holdcr such as described.
. 'hat is claimed is 1. The combination with a fixedprojection. and a h nged-1v mounted structure. of a strip pivotallv cminected to said structure and having a longitudinal slot into which thiprojection extends. the upptr wall of end of the strip 1. A cross strip bridges saidslot having a notch adjacent one end,
and a. dividing strip mounted in the slot and having oppositely, extending spring fingers yieldingly engaging the upper, wall of the,
- slot adjacent one end thereof and the lower wall of the slot adjacent the other end thereof.
2. The combination with a fixed projection and a hinged structure. of a. strip pivota'lly connected to the'hinged structure and having a: longitudinal slot into which the projection extends, one wall of the slot being notched for engagii'ig the projection to support-the hinged structure in one posit on, and opposlte'l'y extendlng spring fingers mounted within the slot and bearing against a the respective walls of the slot adjacent opposite ends thereof respectively.
:3. The COlllbillzltlOn With a hinged strucla eegiie ture and a fixed projection; of a strip slid- I ably mounted on said structure and having a :slot into which said projection extends, one Wall of the slot being notched to receive the "projection and support the hinged structure out of normal position, a cross strip bridging the slot and carried by the I p yoted strip, and oppositely extending spring fingers connected to the cross strip and-bearing at their free ends agamst the opposed walls respectively of the slot.
