To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jon Noea, a citizen of the United States of America,'residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cuspidors, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to cuspidors, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a cuspidor with positive and reliable means, in a manner as will be hereinafter set forth, for closing the outlet of the cuspidor, when the same is accidentally tilted or upset, thereby preventing the contents of the cuspidor from injuring or ruining the carpet, floor or other surface.
A further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a mechanical construction that is simple, durable and highly efficient for the purposes for which it is intended.
With the above and other objects in view theinvention resides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure l is a vertical sectional view of the euspidor showing the same in an open position, and Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the cuspiclor closed.
A cuspidor in accordance with this invention comprises a receptacle 1 having a flat bottom 2, a flat top 3 and a funnel-shaped mouth piece 4 that is formed integral with the fiat top 3 and is in communication with the receptacle 1.
The flat bottom 2 is provided with a vertical barrel 5 having a rod or plunger 6. Pivotally connected to the inner end of the rod 6, as at 7 are arms 8 and pivotally connected to the upper ends of the arms 8 art apertured lugs 9, carried by the inner sides of horizontal shutters 10. The confronting edges of the shutters 10 are provided with yieldable contact pieces 11 to prevent the confronting edges of the shutters from being injured when said shutters are closed, and also to provide a non-leakable connection between the confronting edges of the shutters. The outer edges of the shutters are provided with yieldable sealing strips 12 and these strips and the contact pieces 11 engage the inner side of the top plate 3.
Connecting the confronting sides of the arms 8, adjacent to the lower pivoted ends thereof, is a normally V-shaped spring 13 having one end secured to one of the arms 8, as at 14 and the opposite end loosely connected, as at 15 to the other arm 8, whereby the arms 8 can be opened or spread apart, as shown in Fig. 1. The spring 13, through the medium of the arms 8, retains the shutters 1O normally in proximity to the top plate 3 and with the contact pieces 11 and scaling strips 12 in engagement with said top plate. The rod 6 has the inner end thereof provided with a washer or head 16 to which is connected the upper convolution of a coiled spring 17 adapted to cushion a movement of the rod 6 when said rod is released to close the shutters 10.
The lower end of the rod 6 normally rests upon the floor, this position of the rod retaining the shutters in an open position, as shown in Fig. 1. When the cuspidor is tilted or upset the rod 6 is released and the spring 13 assumes its normal shape, causing the arms 8 to close the shutters 10. The contents of the cuspidor cannot pass through the funnel-shaped mouth piece 1 and when it is desired to clean the cuspidor, it is necessary that the rod 6 be held in a closed position until the contents of the cuspidor can be removed and the interior thereof cleaned.
What I claim is In a cuspidor, the combination with a receptacle having a fiat bottom, a flat top, and a funnel-shaped mouth piece carried by said flat top and in communication with said receptacle, of a vertical rod arranged in the flat bottom of said receptacle, arms pivotally connected to the inner end of said rod, horizontal shutters pivotally connected to the upper ends of said arms, contact pieces carried by the confronting edges of said shutters, sealing strips carried by the outer edges of said shutters, a normally V-shaped spring having one end thereof connected to one arm and the opposite end In testimony whereof I afiix my signature loosely connected to the other arm and in the presence of two Witnesses, adapted to shift said arms and the shutters thereof When said rod is released, and a JOE NOGA' cushioning spring carried by said rod for WVitnesses:
