DEVICE FOR OPENING CANS.

To all whom it may concem Be it known that I, IVER JoHnsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Alobotsford, in the county of Clark and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Opening Cans, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for opening cans and the like.
The object of the invention is to produce a device of this character which may be conveniently connected to the cover of a can or pail of the slip or friction type, so that such cover may be easily removed without the aid of a separate tool which would tend to injure the body of the can or pail'so that the contents thereof would have to be removed.
It is a well known fact that when it is desired to open cans of this type, the covers must be pried therefrom, and 1t isa further object of this invention to provide as a part of the can the hereinafter described'opening device.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arran ement of parts as will be hereinafter fu 1y described and claimed.
In the drawing: Figure 1 is 'a top plan view of a can showing the device in place thereon. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the device after the same has been operated to dislodge the cover.
Referring to the drawing,the numeral 1 designates the can, the same being provided with a central opening 2, and into which the cover 3 fits, said cover and can being of that ty e commonly known as slip or friction.

.and through which the outer end of the lever 6, forming the opening device, projects. The lever 6 is formed from a strip of stout sheet metal and is provided at its inner end with a disk 7 so that the same may be readily grasped foroperation.
To prevent accidental removal of the lever 6, a strip 8 is employed, the inner end of which is riveted to the lever, While its outer end is bent upwardly, and thence downwardly, as at 9, the downwardly bent end resting against the outer projected end of the lever 6. Thus it will be seen that the lever 6 is pivotally connected to the cover 3-, and when the cover is in its proper position to close the can, the outer end of the lever rests upon that portion of the can which encircles the opening 2, thus forming a fulcrum for the lever.
From this construction it will be seen that the inner end of the lever, or that part which carries the disk 7 is located centrally of the cover 3, and in a convenient position for grasping when it is desired to remove the cover, and to do this it is only necessary that the disk 7 be grasped and the lever swung upon its pivot until the cover has been pried from the opening 2 suificiently to permit further removal of said cover. It is obvious from this construction that after the cover has been once removed, the same may be replaced to effectually close the can and preserve the contents thereof.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a device for removing can covers has been provided, which is simple in construction, and efiicient in operation, and one which will in no way interfere with packing of the goods for shipping.
