- My invention relates to blacking boxes or the like and particularly to means for separating .the two parts of the box or other receptacle in which the invention may be embodied.
- Blacking boxes and other receptacles usually consist of a holding or containing part, and a lid or cover applied to the holding or containing part by a frictional fit in a manner to exclude air, either for the purpose of preventing drying out of the contents, to prevent the contents from becoming moldy, or to prevent the cover from being accidentally removed and the contents spilled; depending, of course, on the nature of the contents.
- While my invention is particularly designed for blacking boxes it is apparent from the foregoing that it may be embodied in various other receptacles. It is'very desirable to have air-tight covers on blacking boxes, not only during shipment or while stored, but also during the times of their be ing used, as blacking boxes are frequently opened and closed before the contents are entirely consumed. The frequent opening of the box is annoying and difficult when tight fitting, which it should be to exclude air from the contents until entirely used. This annoyance and difficulty is entirely eliminated by the use of my invention, which has for its primary object the provision of a box or receptacle having a tight fitting cover and being provided with means for quickly and easily removing the cover from the body of the box or receptacle.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, CHARLES STUPIAN, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing in Bufialo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blanking-Boxes or the Like, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to blacking boxes or the like and particularly to means for separating .the two parts of the box or other receptacle in which the invention may be embodied. v
Blacking boxes and other receptacles usually consist of a holding or containing part, and a lid or cover applied to the holding or containing part by a frictional fit in a manner to exclude air, either for the purpose of preventing drying out of the contents, to prevent the contents from becoming moldy, or to prevent the cover from being accidentally removed and the contents spilled; depending, of course, on the nature of the contents.
While my invention is particularly designed for blacking boxes it is apparent from the foregoing that it may be embodied in various other receptacles. It is'very desirable to have air-tight covers on blacking boxes, not only during shipment or while stored, but also during the times of their be ing used, as blacking boxes are frequently opened and closed before the contents are entirely consumed. The frequent opening of the box is annoying and difficult when tight fitting, which it should be to exclude air from the contents until entirely used. This annoyance and difficulty is entirely eliminated by the use of my invention, which has for its primary object the provision of a box or receptacle having a tight fitting cover and being provided with means for quickly and easily removing the cover from the body of the box or receptacle.
My invention consists in the novel features of construction to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the subjoined claims.
In the accompanying drawing I have shown my invention embodied in what I now consider its most approved form, but it will be clear from the detailed description following that changes may be resorted to without departing from my invention or sacrificing any of the advantages thereof.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a blacking box constructed according to my invention, the cover being shown in fully closed or normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view with the cover partly lifted on the body of the box. Fig. 3 is a cross-section taken on line 3 3, Fig. 2. Referring now to the particular embodiment of my invention shown, A represents the body or holding portion of the box and B the cover which fits tightly onto the upper marginal portion of the cylindrical side wall of said holding portion, the extent to which it may be forced on the said side wall being limited by an annular external bead a against which the edge of the cover is adapted to bear when closed upon the body portion.
0 designates a second annular external bead on the body-portion which is separated from the bead a by an intervening space, forming a groove (Z. While this groove is formed by means of the two external beads on the cylindrical wall of the body-portion it is clear that it may be otherwise formed so long as it serves the purpose for which it is intended.
6 represents a cover lifter which is preferably formed of wire circled around the body of the box and entered into the annular groove (Z, said lifter having an outstanding arm 9 by means of which it can be given partial rotary movement on the body-portion of the box and an upstanding engaging stud h. The wire from which this lifter is formed is preferably bent upon itself at one end, as at 2', to form two members lying in contact which constitute the outstanding arm g, one of said members having an upturned terminal which is also one of the terminals of the wire and forms the engaging stud 71. From the inner end of the other member of said arm the wire is curved into circular form to fitaround the box, as at k, and the other terminal of the wire is twisted around the arm 9, as at Z.
The cylindrical wall of the cover has a fixed inclined projection or outstanding cam m formed by providing said wall with an outstanding elongated bead inclined with respect to the edge of the cover, the under side of said bead being adapted to be engaged by the stud h when turning the lifter on the body-portion of the box. Slight force applied to the arm 9 of the lifter, after it has engaged the cam on the cover, will cause the cover to be raised from the bodyportion of the box and at the same time loosen therefrom so that the cover can be easily removed.
In applying the cover it is merely necessary to see that the cam m thereon is out of line with the upstanding stud h of the lifter so that the cover can be forced tightly on the body-portion.
While I have shown the cam formed by beading the cover as described, it is clear that it may be otherwise formed on or applied to the cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. A receptacle comprising a body-portion having an annular groove, a cover having an outstanding inclined elongated projection, and a cover lifter having a circular portion rotatably fitting into said groove, an outstanding arm and an upstanding stud adapted to engage said inclined projection on the cover.

A receptacle comprising a body-portion having an annular groove, a cover having an inclined elongated projection on' its circularrside'wall, and a cover lifter formed of .wire curved to provide a circular port-ion fitting into said annular groove and bent having a circular portion fitting into said 1 groove, an outstanding arm and a stud arranged at an angle to said arm adapted to engage said lncllned pro ectlon.
