HERMAN LEwIs, or BROOKLYN, Nnw YORK.
HOLDER FOR JARS, OANs, sw.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 592,012, dated October 19, 189'?.A Application filed March 17, 1897. Serial No. 627,998. (No model.)
T all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, HERMAN LEWIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn,in the county of Kings and VState of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Holders for Jars, Cans, dac., of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to holders for jars, cans, and other vessels; and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is adapted to receive a condensed-milk can, fruit or jelly jar, or other similar vessel; and with these and other objects in view the invention consists in4 the device hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention is fully Adisclosed in the following specica-tiomof which the accompanying drawings form a part, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional side view of my improved can-holder, and Fig. 2 a cross-section thereof on the line 2 2.
In the drawings forming part of this speci.- iication the separate parts of myimprovement are designated by the same numerals of reference in each of the views, and in the wardly and upwardly, as shown at 8, to form legs or supports for the holder.
vSecured within the top band 5, and preferably to the upper ends of each of the vertical side strips 7, are spring plates or arms 9,which extend downwardly and' inwardly, and which are provided with inwardly-:directed flanges or supports 10, and the lower ends of said plates or arms 9 are preferably within the bottom band 6. I also provide a handle 1l,
which is secured to the top and bottom bands 5 and 6, and the can-holder is also provided with a cap or cover'l2, which is hinged thereto at 13v adjacent to the point where the handle 11 is connected with the top band 5, and connected with the upper portion ofv the handle at 14 is a spring 15, which bears 'upon the cap or covei` l2, and holds itin the closed position, and said cap or `cover is provided with a spring-arm 16, which projects outwardly and upwardly over thehandle, and by means of which'the cap or cover may be partially raised.
The can or other vessel is placed within the holder and rests upon the flanges or supports 10, which are secured to the spring-arms 9, and said can or vessel is held in place in the holder by said spring-arms, as will be readily understood, and the cap or cover l2 is intended to form a cover for the can or vessel when in position Within the holder.
My improvment is perfectly adapted for use in connection with condensed-milk cans, but it will be apparent that other cans, jars, and similar vessels may also be placed therein.
My improved can-holder is cylindrical in form.
. Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to 'secure by Letters Patentn l. As an improved article of manufacture, a can-holder, comprising a top and bottom band, side strips by which said bands are connected, said side strips being provided with downwardly and upwardly curved extensions forming a support; spring-strips secured to said top band, and which are directed downwardly and inwardly, and provided with inwardly-directed angular projections at the lower end thereof; and a spring -operated cover, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. As an improved article of manufacture,
a' holder for jars or cans comprising a top and A directed downwardly and inwardly and provided with angular extensions at the lower end thereof adapted to hold the can or jar and a handle secured to the top and bottom band,
andalid pivotailyeonneoted with the topband l ence of the subscribing,r Witnesses, this 16th adjacent to said handle, a spring secured to day of March, 1897. said handle and adapted to engage said lid,
said lid being also provided With a handle, HERMAN LEWIS' 5 snbstantiallyas and for the purpose set forth. Witnesses:
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as C. GEEST,
my invention I have signed myname, in pre's- T. M. CARR.
