To all Iwhom it may concern.'

Be it known that I, ERNEST O. MEssMoRE,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Tipton, in the county of Tipton, State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements i'n Odorless Garbage-Receptacles; and I do hereby declare the f ollowing to be a full, clear, and exact desemption of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which 1t appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements 1n garbage receptacles. and particularly to garbage receptacles which are adapted to pre vent odors escaping therefrom.

One object of the invention is to provide.

a garbage receptacle which is simple in o peration and construction and which will etl'ectually prevent escape of odors from the interior of the receptacle when the cover is raised.

Another object is to provide a garbage receptacle of such construction that the same can be readily taken apart and cleaned.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of a garbage can made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation. Fig. 3 is a top plan view. Fig. 4 is aY sectional view on the line 4-4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a transverse sectional view on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional detail view of a portion of the rotary member within the upper portion of the receptacle.

Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings, 10 represents a cylindrical member which is open at both top and bottom, a removable bottom -11 being secured to the bottomof the cylinder and disposed against a suitable-packing washer 13. The periphery of thev bottom is provided with a plurality of radially extendingJ ears 13 in which are pivotally carried the bolts 14,

'these bolts being arranged to engage between the biurcated portions of the angle plates 15 secured to the sides of the cylinders above the ears. The upper ends of the bolts carry nuts 16 for drawing the bottomA firmly inte clamping relationwith the cylinder. Disposed on the lupper end of the cylinder is a plate 17 also provided with the ot the casing.

peripheral-ears 18, but theseears are bifurcated as shown, and receive therein the upper ends of the clamping bolts 19. pivotally carried by the brackets 2O mounted on the cylinder below the ears. yMounted on this plate 17 is a casing 21 which is disposed over an opening 22 formed in the plate 17 which leads into the interior of the cylinder 10 or body of the receptacle. Disposed transverselyv in the casing and journaled in the sides thereof is a shaft 23 the intermediate portion of which is squared in cross section as shown at 24. Secured to each of the faces of the squared portion 24 is the intermediate portion` of an integrally connected pair of wings 25 over which is secured a similar pair of wings 26. Suitably secured between the outer ends of the wings are rubber strips 27 while between the side or marginal edges are secured similar strips 28. The strips 27 bear lirmly against the curved wall of the casing 21 while the strips 28 bear firmly against the vertical opposite side walls of the casing. It will be noted Vwhen the said strips bear against the walls ofthe casing'they will be bent downward resulting in the said ends of the strips coming close together. From one end of the opening 22 is a curved plate 29 which is of the same width as the casing 21 and against which` the strips 27 successively bear. This platel extends above and below the top 17, a short-curvedwall 29 extending from the upper end of the wall 29 to the adjacent wall The structure just described forms aV rimless wheel in which there are four radiating blades adapted to be brought successively in a horizontal plane below the opening 30 in the upper rectangular portion 31 ofthe casing. A hinged cover 32 is arrangedto close this' opening. On one of the outerendsrof the shaft23 is secured a ratchet Wheel33,. and on thisshaft but loosely rotatable-thereon` isa hand lever 34 which carries`a ,spring pressed'pawl 35 disposed for 4 'the pawl 35 engages the next notch after which the lever is depressed so as to rotate The the shaft 23. This rotation of the shaft moves the blade Which lcarries the garbage downwardly so that the garbage is dumped into the receptacle, and another blade disposed under the opening in position for the neXt deposit. `When the lower of the blades moves up into the portion of the casing opposite to that provided with the opening 30 it carries some odors with it, and to permit of these odors escaping there is formed an opening 36 in the side Wall 0f the casing near the upper end.

By reason of the removable end of the top and bottom members of the receptacle it Will readily be seen that when these are taken apart, the receptacle can be readily cleaned or may be used for convenience in dumping. Ordinarily the top would be taken oli" and the contents of the receptacle dumped through the upper end. Should the can be lifted over a point at Which it is desired to deposit the receptacle, the bottom can be removed to 'permit `the contents to readily flow there.-

What is claimed is:

A garbage receptacle comprising a body, a casing mounted on the body, said casing having an access opening, a rotary element Within the casing, a plurality of radially eX- tending blades carried by the rotary element, iexible packing members carried by the ends and sides of the blades and bearing against the Walls of the casing, and means carried bythe rotary element for turning the said element in step by step fashion to bring each of the blades successively beneath the access opening and into position to discharge its contents into the receptacle.
