SANITARY GARBAGE CAN.
APPLICATION FILED JULY 2, 1913.
l m g PAUL CLEMENT, 0F VOILGA, SOUTH DAKOTA- SANITARY GARBAGE-CAN.
To all whom it may concern I Be it known that 1, PAUL CLEMENT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Volga, in the county or" Brookings, State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sanitary Gan barge-Cans; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description. of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to garbage cans and has for an object to provide a device of this character which will be so constructed that garbage may be deposited therein without the escape of odor.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a novel tilting false bottom within the can which receives the garbage, and
after the cover is closed may be tilted to deposit the garbage in the bottom of the can.
A still further object is to provide novel means for forming an air-tight seat for the tilting false bottomwhereby escape of odors is prevented, while at the same time shock to the parts when the false bottom is re turned to operative position is reduced to a minimum.
A still further object is to provide a spring for automatically returning the false bottom to closed position after each actuation.
With the above objects in view the invention consists of certain novel details of construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed,it being understood that various modifications may be made in the minor details of construction within the scope of the appended claim.
in the accompanying drawing illustrating this invention :-Figure l is a side elevation of my improved garbagecan. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section therethrough. Fig. 3
is a longitudinal sectional view on the line 33 Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line 4-4 Fig. 3. I t
Referring now to the drawing in which like characters of reference designate similar parts, 10 designates a garbage can which is closed by-a cover 11 that preferably fits air-tight. In carryin out my invention 1 provide a circular false bottom 12 within the can substantially at the middle thereof, the false bottom being fixed at one end to a crank handle 13 that is ijournaled in the-side Specification of Zetters Yatent.

nal 14: that is journaled in the side of the can. Arranged above the false bottom is a stop 15 consisting of a half ring of yieldng material such as rubber, the stop extending upon the inner wall of the can horizontally from the gudgeon to about the crank handle. Arranged belowthe false bottom and diametrically opposite from the stop 15, 1s a half ring stop 16 of rubber or like material that extends horizontally around the inner wall of the can from the gudgeon to about the crank handle. These stops form yielding seats which when the false bottom is disposed in closed position prevent escape or" odors, and also form yielding stops which cushion the false bottom and operating parts against shock when the false bottom is returned to closed position after each actua- For returning the false bottom to opera 'tive position after each actuation, a helical spring 17 is seated on the crank handle outside of the can and is connected at one end to the can wall and at the opposite end to the crank handle as shown, the spring being placed under tension and storing up energy as the crank handle is rotated to tilt the false bottom to return the false bottom automatically to closed position upon release of the crank handle.
To deposit garbage in the can, the cover 11 is removed and the garbage dumped in upon the false bottom, and then the cover 11 is replaced. The crank handle is now rotated with a resultant tilting of the false bottom and resultant discharge of the garbage therefrom into the bottom of the can. Upon release of the crank handle the false bottom is returned to closed position ready for the next deposite of garbage.
From the above description it will be seen that l have provided an extremely simple and inexpensive garbage can which will not emit odors when being filled or at other times, and which will be formed of a few simple parts that will not easily get out of order.
What is claimed, is
In a garbage can provided with a removable cover, a removable false bottom pivot- "ally mounted midway of the can, oppositely MP5 I of said rings being engaged by the upper face of one side of the false bottom and the other being engaged byvthe upper face of the other side of the said bottom, to limit the rotation of said bottom to a half revolution, a spring carried by the false bottom at its pivotal mounting' to yieldably hold said :bottom in contact with said stops, a crank handle to revolve said bottom out of engagement with the stops. 10
In testimony whereof, I afiiX my signature, in thepresence of two Witnesses.
PAUL CLEMENT. Witnesses:
