GARBAGE-RECEPTACLE.

MORAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grosse Pointe Farms,- in the county of Wayne, State of lllichigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in GarbageReceptacles; and I do declare the following to be a. full. clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will err able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to makeand use the same, refer ence being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which fiorrn a part of this specification.

This invention relates to a garbage receptacle and consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully set forth and pointed out particularly in the claims.

The object of the invention is to provide a garbage receptacle which may be placed in the ground and kept closed so as to exelude flies therefrom, provision being made for readily opening the receptacle when it is desired to place garbage therein, and for permitting the vessel containing the garbage to be readily removed from the receptacle by the collector.

The above object is attained by the structure illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which 1 Figure 1 is a general view in perspective of a. garbage receptacle constructed in accordance with my invention. Referring;- to the characters of reference, 1 designates a section of sewer crock placed vertically in the ground with its upper end projecting some distance above the surface. The lower end of the crock closed to form a bottom by a filling :2 of concrete, or other suitable material. The top?) of the receptacle is circular to conform to the shape of the crock and is supported upon the upper dge thereof. The under side of the top 3 is provided with concentric flanges t and 5, respectively, adapted to embrace the top of the crock to retain the cover in place. Formed centrally through the top or cover 3 is a square opening surrounded by a fixed Specification of Letters Patent.

7 is pivoted through the sides thereof to the hood 8, as shown at 9, and the spout 8 is in like. manner pivoted to the hood, as shown at 10. The parts are so formed as to allow the sides 11 of the spout 8 to liewithin the sides 120i the spout 7. When the spouts are closed. as shown in Figs. 1 and 2, their upper edges tit closely together and the overlapping sides' thereof assist in forming a tight closure for the mouth of the hood which is tapering in form to shed the water therefrom To provide for operating the pivotally mounted spouts to swing them upon their pivots to the open position shown in Fig. 3, links 13 and 1t are employed whose outer ends are pivoted to the sides of the spouts, respectively and whose inner ends are pivotally joined at 15 to a short link 16 which is in turn pivoted to the inner end of a lever 17 filler-tuned at 18 to the top or cover 3. r\'lountcd under the outer end of said lever is acompressible spring 19 whose tension is normally exerted to hold the pivoted spouts in the closed position, as shown in Fig. 2. When'it is desired to open the spouts, pressure is applied by the foot to the outer end of the lever 17, thereby raising the inner end of said lever to actuate the links 13 and it, which form the elements of a toggle lever, to swing the spouts 7 and 8 outwardly on their pivots to the position shown in Fig. This operation causes the lower ends of said spouts to swing together and form a chute which will direct the garbage,'or other refuse, centrally into the pail or container 20 seated in the crock upon the bottom 2. Upon releasing the pressure upon the outer end of the lever 17, the expansive force of the spring 19 will return the spouts to the closed position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a position in which the mouth of the hood is tightly closed by the pivoted spouts, which in this respect form complementary portions of the cover of the receptacle.

When the pail or container has become filled, or when the collector of refuse desires to remove the pail or container, access to said pail may be readily had by lifting the cover from the top of the crock through the medium of the handles QLWhich are attached to the upper edges of the spouts. By removing the whole top in this manner,

ready access to the pail or container is afforded, enabling it to be taken out and emptied, and readily replaced in the receptacle, after which the cover and its pivoted spouts are replaced thereon, said spouts at once becoming operative to close the receptacle and to serve as a means for directing refuse into the pail within the receptacle when the lever 17 is actuated to swing the pivoted spouts to the open position.

Having thus fully set forth my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A receptacle having a cover, spouts pivotally mounted in the cover to swing to gether at their upper ends and close the opening into the receptacle, said spouts being movable upon their pivots to expose the opening through the cover and form a chute below said opening to direct refuse into the receptacle, and a removable container within said receptacle below said spouts.

2. A receptacle having a cover, spouts pivotally mounted in the cover to swing together at their upper ends and close the opening into the receptacle, said spouts being movable upon their pivots to expose the opening through the cover and form a chute below said opening to direct refuse into the receptacle, and means for actuating said spouts in unison. 3. A receptacle having a cover, spouts pivotally mounted in the cover to swing together at their upper ends and close' the opening into the receptacle, said spouts being movable upon their pivots to expose the opening through the cover and form a chute below said opening to direct refuse into the receptacle, a removable container within the receptacle below said spouts, pivoted links connected to the sides of the spouts, and an operating lever pivotally connected to said links.
