TRASH-RECEPTACLE.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER SACHS, a citi- 4 zen of the United States, residing at Petersburg, in the county of Dinwiddie and State of Virginia, have invented a new and useful Trash-Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to new and useful improvements in receptacles, and more particularly to trash receptacles, to .be located on street corners, or other public places, to receive and contain papers and trash usually discarded on the public streets.

The primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character including a main receptacle having means for directing the trash or refuse deposited there- 'in, to a removable receptacle supported within the main receptacle.

A further object of the invention is to provide means within the main receptacle for properly supporting the removable receptacle within the main receptacle, whereby the same will be held against displace ment therein, and at the same time will be supported to receive material deposited in the main receptacle without the possibility of the material falling between the walls of the removable receptacle, and the main receptacle.

With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing fromthe spirit of the invention.

Referring to the drawing in detail, the receptacle is shown as including a main or body portion 5 and an upper or top portion 6, the body portion and top portion having cotiperating flanges Z, apertured as at 8 to receive the securing bolts 9, whereby the top and bottom portions of the receptacle are secured together. e

tion 5 extending downwardly and terminating at points below the plane of the lower side of the bottom 10, to provide flanges to cooperate with the upper edges of the supporting legs 11, which as shown, are secured thereto by means of the bolts 12, the supporting legs being preferably formed of sheet metal bent to provide right angle surfaces to exactly fit within the respective corners formed by the flanges of the side walls of the body This bottom 10, is provided with upwardly extending flanges 13, spaced from the inner side walls of the body portion 5, and provide a receiving compartment for receiving the removable receptacle 141, which is in the form of a sheet metal box, the side walls of which extend upwardly terminating at points directly below the lower edges of the funnel 15.

The funnel 15, includes side walls 16 and end walls 17, which extend downwardly at an angle, the upper edges of the funnel 15 being secured to the inner walls of the body 5, by any suitable means, the sai'ne being disposed however, substantially intermediate the length of the body An opening 18, is provided in the lower rear wall of the body 5, and is closed by the door 19, hinged to the body 5, as at 20, so that the same swings downwardly, thus providing a door which is normally held in a closed position, a latch member 21 being pivotally connected to one of the lower flanges of the side walls of the body 5, to move into coiiperative relation with the door 19, for locking the same in its closed position, the handle 22, being provided to permit the door to be easily operated by an attendant, in the event that it becomes neces sary to empty the receptacle or container 14.

Disposed on the inner surface of the door 19, are the flanges 23, which flanges are of a length to engage the container 14;, when the door is in a closed position, to force the container 14: into engagement with the flanges 13, provided on the bottom 10, thus locking the container 14 within the body of the receptacle against displacement, in the event that the trash receptacle were knocked down or blown over.

An opening 24 is provided in the top por- V 6 From the foregoing it will be seen that refuse deposited within the receptacle, falls downward contacting with the funnel 15, from where it is directed to the container 14, the funnel 15 being supported in such relation with the container 14, that the material will not fall between the side walls of the container 14, and the inner walls of the body 5, thus providing an absolutely sanitary receptacle, since when the container 14- is removed and cleaned, all the refuse within the trash receptacle has been removed.

It might be further stated that due to the spaced-relation between the container 14% and the inner walls of the body 5, the trash receptacle is efficiently ventilated, air passing around the container 14 and upwardly within the trash receptacle between the upper edges of the container 14, and funnel 15.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is 1. In a receptacle, a funnel shaped member supported within the receptacle substantially intermediate the length thereof, said funnel shaped member dividing the receptacle into upper and lower compartments, cooperating flanges extending upwardly from the bottom of the lower compartment, said flanges being disposed in spaced relation with the side walls of the lower compartment, the flanges being disposed directly under the funnel shaped member, a removable receptacle adapted to fit between the flanges, a hinged door i'orming a part of one wall of the receptacle, and means on the door for contacting with the removable receptacle for holding the removable receptacle under the funnel shaped member.

2. In a receptacle, a funnel shaped member disposed within the receptacle and dividing the receptacle into an upper and lower compartment, flanges extendingupwardly from the bottom of the lower compartment, a removable receptacle adapted to be embraced by the flanges for supporting the removable receptacle in a position directly under the funnel shaped member, a pivoted closure forming a part of one of the walls of the first mentioned receptacle, and a plurality of flanges extending laterally it'rom the pivoted closure and contacting with the removable receptacle when the closure is in its closed position, said flanges adapted to support the removable receptacle against displacement within the lower compartment.
