To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SELIG LEBACH, a subject of the King of Prussia, residing at Frankfort-on-the-Main, in the Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans, (for which I have obtained patents in France, No. 230,231, dated August 30, 1893; in Austria-Hungary, No. 34,422 and No. 52,874, dated September 28, 1893, and in Belgium, No. 108,224, dated February 15, 1894,) of which the following is a specification.

This invention has reference to an improved garbage-can, in which the garbage collected in houses is stored until it can be transferred to the garbage-carts and removed.

Heretofore garbage or ash-receptacles were formed of barrels or boxes, which are unsightly, or sheet-metal cans, which are objectionable as there is no cover for closing the same.

This invention is intended to furnish a garbage-can in which the garbage, ashes and other waste accumulating in kitchens or other places are collected and tightly covered, until the same can be transferred to the garbagewagon or cart; and the invention consists of a garbage-can formed of a body of suitable shape, which body is provided with a fixed top-portion having an upwardly-bent flange, and a movable portion or lid that is hinged to the upwardly-bent flange, said lid closing the can and being adapted to be moved into open position, in which latter position it is held by the flange of the fixed portion, as will be fully described hereinafter and finally pointed'out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views,showing two different forms of myimproved garbage can, and Figs. 3 and 4 are vertical transverseseotions, respectively ofFigs. 1 and 2.

Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of my improved garbage-can, which is made of sheet-metal, or any other suitable material, and which is either made of an oblongbox having an outwardly-inclined front and a rear wall and pentagonal side-walls, as

shown in Figs. 1 and 3, or the body of which is made cylindrical shaped, as shown in Figs. 2 and'4. The bottom of the body A is supported on raised feet a or on a bottom-flange a, so that a handle h can be applied to the bottom of .the can, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4.

The top of the can is formed of a stationary portion B, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3,,or instead of being flat, as it is shown, it may be outwardly and downwardly inclined, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The top of the can is also formed with an outwardly and downwardly inclined rim B around the month, said topportion B and rim B converging at about the center of the top. The top-portion Bis attached to the side and rear walls of the body A and is provided with an upwardly bent,

substantially upright, flange b, that is preferably made in one piece with the stationary top-portion B and extends from side to side of the can. To the flange b is hinged a movable top-portion or lid 0, the hinged-connections 01 of which are riveted, soldered or otherwise attached to the flange b, so that no dust or dirt can settle in the hinges, the hinges being raised by means of the upwardly-inclined top-portion B above the accumulation of garbage and ashes in the body A. The flange b serves for two purposes; first, to prevent the settling of any dust or dirt in the hinges of the lid 0, the leaves being to that end attached to the upwardlyprojecting flange b, and secondly, as a support for the hinged lid 0 when the same is placed in open position, as shown in dotted lines in Figs. 3 and 4. The body Ais further provided with handles it, at opposite sides, so as to facilitate the moving of the can and the handling of the same in dumping the garbage out of it.

The lid 0 is preferably formed with a depending flange C which overlaps the top edge of the can when said lid is closed down and thereby more securely seals the can against the escape of material and objectionable smells.

The lid of the garbage-can is opened when it is desired to drop the garbage into the same and it is closed after the garbage is dropped, so as to keep the same out of sight.

Whenthe garbage can is to be emptied into the garbage-cart, the can is taken hold of at the bottom handle and the flange and lifted rests on its front part, so that the lid opens automatically and assumes a vertical position, so as to permit the discharge of the corn tents of the can. On removing the can and placing it upright the lid closes automatically.

In case the garbage-wagon has openings with hinged gates, the lid serves the additional purpose of pushing the gates inwardly into open position and holding the gates until the contents of the can are discharged into the wagon.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl 1. A garbage-can, composed of a body, a stationary top-portion provided with an upwardly-extending flange extending from side to side of the can, said body having a top rim around its mouth extending downwardly and outwardly and converging with the stationary top-portion at about the center of the top of the body and a movable lid hinged to the flange and supported by the rim of the body 25 at a downward inclination, substantially as set forth.

2. A garbage-can, composed of a body, a sta tionary top-portion inclined downwardly and outwardly, and provided with an'upwardlyextending flange extending from side to side of the can, said body having a top-rim extending downwardly and outwardly and converging with the stationary top-portion at about the center of the top of the body, and a movable lid hinged to the flange and supported by the rim of the body at a downward inclination whereby the hinged connection of the movable top-portion or lid with the stationarytop-portion is placed sufliciently above the contents of the can, so as to prevent the accumulation of dirt in the hinge, substantially as set forth.
