SYLVESTER HARR BUn-RoUGHs, or CALGARY, ALBERTA, cAN JA',"
G RBAG -crisp To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that ,I, SYLVESTER Hanan BnnRoUeHs,of the 'city of oa1gar ,1infth"' Province of Alberta, Dominion of Canada. have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garbage-Cans, of which the following is the specification.
This invention relates to garbage and oily waste cans or like receptaclesparticularly of that type adapted to be utilized in house holds, stores and the like and the objects of the invention are to facilitate the opening and discharging of the can to automatically close the cover, to so construct the can that water will not percolate therethrough and other objects which will be shown hereafter, and it consists essentially of the improved construction of garbage can particularly de scribed and set forth in the following speci-' fication and accompanying drawings forming part of the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective View of the improved garbage can. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the top of the can showing the lid or cover in an open position.
the lid or cover closed. Fig.4; is a plan view of the can. Fig. 5 is a frontelevation of the can.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several'drawings.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the garbage can consisting of the body member 1 which is preferably constructed of one plate bent in semi-circular form at the front and having a straight back, the ends of said plate being secured together in any suitable manner to render the jointwater tight, the top of the said back being provided with a plurality of projections 2 bent over and adapted to form one member of the hinge. A handle 17 is further provided located on and rigidly secured to the back of the body portion 1, the front of the said body being provided with transversely extending strengthening strips 18 and 19 located near the top and bottom thereof and rigidly secured thereto, such strips being adapted to carry longitudinally extending strengthening strips 21 attached thereto.
3 represents the bottom consisting of a semi-circular plate provided with a flange 4 extending around the outer periphery thereof and upwardly therefrom, such flange be outer peripheryof,
theretoby rivets 5 "or'thelikel" 6 represents a lid or cover consisting of a substantially right angles thereto, the back edge of such plate being provided withia plurality of projections 8 bent over to form the second member of the hinge, such projections 8 being adapted to engage with the projections '2 and be pivotally secured thereto by meansof the rod or hinge pin 9.
The lid or cover is provided with an angle iron member 10 rigidly secured to the top thereof, such angle member being provided with an orifice 11 extending therethrough and is further provided with angle iron members 12 rigidly secured to the outer face of the flange 7, on diametrically opposite sides thereof. a

cular plate and adapted to engage with the i the bodyl and-besecured the body 1 and provided with orifices 14 ends adapted to be pivotally connected to one end of the link 16, the other end of the said link being pivotally connected to the angle iron bracket 10. i V
In the operation of emptying the garbage can the handle 17 is gripped to elevate the back and discharge the contents from the can, the tilting of the front of the can being limited by gripping the handle 15 which swings backwardlyengaging with the angle iron member 12, and simultaneously opening the cover or lid 6. l
The length of the link 16 and the position of the angle iron members 12 areso designed that the lid or cover opens through approximately so that when the can is returned to a vertical position the lid will close by gravity.
In use, a slight pressure at any point of the handle 15 above the cover will raise the cover closes automatically. v
As many changescould be made in the above construction and many apparently widely different embodiments of my invention, within the scope of the claim, constructed without departing from the spirit or scope thereof, it is intended that all mat-.

What I claim as my invention is:
The combination With a pail of a gravity closed lid hinged thereon, a bail pivotally mounted to the pail, provided intermediate of its ends with a U-shaped projection, a link operatively connecting the lid and bail 1 and designed to retain the latter in a normally vertical position, and angle brackets rigidly mounted on diametrically opposite sides of the lid designed to limit the rotation of the bail to less than a right angle.
In Witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses. SYLVESTER HARRY BURROUGHS. /Vitnesses:
EMILY H. OAHILL, HARRY W. DUNN.
