IMPROVEVMENT IN GARBAGE-RECEPTACLES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N o. 180,277, dated July 25, 1876; application tiled July 3, 1876. h

To all whom t may concern Be it known that l, ANDREW SCHMITT, ot' Williamsburg, Kings county, State of New York, have invented certain Improvements in' Garbage and Street-Refuse Receptacles, of which the following is a specification:

rIhe object of my invention is to provide for improved receptacles for all kinds of refuse, such as ashes, garbage, 85e., which are at present deposited in boxes or barrels, being' placed on the sidewalks, and from which said refuse is taken and removed at certain stipulated hours, the boxes and barrels in the meantime remaining on the sidewalks as an obnoxious nuisance, and obstructing the passage. My improved receptacle is also intended to hold the street sweepings until removed, which now are swept together in heaps in the streets, and are liable to again be distributed by Wind,`rain, and the traffic. receptacle eectually obviates all these imperfections and difliculties, as the garbage and street-refuse receptacle proper is placed in another receiver, which is sunk in the ground with the top level with the sidewalk. rlhis outer receiver is provided with a lid or cover, being, preferably, hinged to one side ol' the same, and which can be opened or removed at will, in order to deposit or sweep into the inner receptacle, placed inside the outer receiver, the garbage, refuse, ashes, streetsweepings, &c. By providing the inner receptacle Withhandles the same may be readily lifted up and out of the outer receiver, and its contents thus emptied into carts or wagons,

My improved after which the emptied receptacle is again put back into its receiver, when the lid or cover is again let down on the top of the same, flush Wi-th the'sidewalk, and presenting the appearance of the commonly-used coal-holevaults cover.

In order to more fully describe my invention, I refer to the accompanying drawing, of y which Fig. lis a sectional elevation of my improved garbnge and street-refuse receptacle. Fig. 2 is a top View, with the lid of the outer receiver raised.

A is the box or receptacle for the deposit of the garbage and street-refuse, with the handles a a. B is the receiver for the box or receptacle A. b b are two projections from the top rim of the receiver B, by which the same is hung up and held level to the top side of the sidewalk agstone, in which is made a hole for this purpose. These projections are made hollow, having openings at the top in order to serve as receptacles for the handles a c. O is the lid, hinged at g to one side of the receiver B.

Having thus described my invention, I desire to claim- The receiver B, with projections b b and lid G, in combination with the receptacle A, with the handles a a, all substantially arranged as and for the purpose set forth.
