W. J. RASIN.
CANISTERS.
Patented 0ct.31, 1876.

UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICEc WILLIAM J. BASIN, OF JENKINTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CANISTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 183,971, dated October 31, 1876; application led May e, 1876.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM J. BASIN, of Jenkintown, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Canisters or Show-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a clear and exact description of the nature thereof, sufficient to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains, to fully understand, make, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this speciiication, in which- Figures l and 2 are front views of the canister or box embodying my invention. Figs. 3 and 4 are side views thereof.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.
My invention consists of a downward-opening lid, which is adapted as a receptacle or trough for catching the droppings from the canister or box, and also for purposes of exhibition of samples. It also consists of the front of a canister or box, constructed with a concavity for receiving and supporting the convex face of the lid thereof.
Referring to the drawings, A represents the body of a canister or box, and B the lid, which,is constructed of semi-cylindrical form, and hinged to the body A, so that it may be opened downward. It will be seen that when the lid is opened it presents or constitutes a receptacle or trough at the front side of the body A, so that when articles are being lifted by scoop or hand forward from the interior of the body, droppings will fall into the lid, and they are thus gathered and prevented from falling on the floor. By this construction, also, the lid provides means for exhibitingsamples of thecontents of thebody, and thus there is formed an improved order of show-boxes. When the lid is shut, the body will be completely closed.
In order to present the opening of the body to the front, one of the upper corners is cut away to form such opening, as more clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4., and the lid is hinged to the wall of the canister at the bottom of said opening; the side walls extending in a diagonal direction for supporting the lid in a closed position, and preventing the accidental opening thereof.
The front face of the body A is formed with a concavity, G, which is so located that when the lid is opened its outer or convex face will enter and be supported in said concavity, which also permits the lid to open to a great extent and fully expose the inner or concave face of the lid.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The body A, having a downward-Opeliing lid, B, which, when opened, presents a receptacle at one side ofthe body, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The body A, having a concavity,0, in one of its sides, in combination with the semicylindrical lid B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
WILLIAM J. BASIN.
