Description

'G. M. CHURCH.
COAL-BOX. No. 190.553 Patented May 8,1877` IHIIIIIISIIINWJUi W////////////////// HIIIIIEEHUHHiiHW\ WITNEEEES: INVENTU @a %MM UNITED STATES PATENT OFIEG GEORGE M. CHUROH, OF ROGERSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-BOXES.
specif cation forming part of Letters Patent No. l90,553, dated May 8, 1877; app1ication filed March 30, 1877.
To all whom 't may concer' W Be it known that I, GEORGE M. CHURGH, of' Rogersville, in the connty of Greene and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coal-Boxes; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use it, reference 'being had to the accompanying dra wings, which form part ofthis specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in coal-boxes; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts that will be more fnlly described hereinafter, whereby a convenient receptacle for holding' both the coal and the shovel, tongs, and poker is produced.
The accompanying drawing represents my invention.
a represents the coal-box, made of any desired form and size, and which is raised to any desired height above the floor by the legs c at each end. The lid d, which fits snugly down over the top of the box, is hinged at its rear end, and to its front end is hinged a smaller lid, e, which inclines downward at an angle, and closes the inclined front end of the box, through which the coal is taken out With a shovel, as it is needed for the fire. By thus having the lid made in two parts the principal one need never be raised, except in filling the box in the first instance, as the smaller one will be ofjust the size to allow the shovel to be freely used.
The bottom g of the box inclines slightly downward from its front end down to the point x, so that the shovel can be easily inserted under the coal, and from the point :c to the back of the box the bottom rises slightly., so as to rather throw the coal forward to where the shovel can readily reach it. Formed under the bottom g is a compartmcnt, i, in which the shovel and tongs are to be kept.
A box tlus constructed' not only hides the coal from View, but keeps all dirt and dust arising from it confined in the box,'and can be made into an ornanental piece of furniture.
Having thus described my invention, I claim- A'coal-box, a, provided with the two lids d e, an inclined bottom, g, and a compartment under the bottom for holding the shovel and tougs, snbstantially as specified.
In testinony that I claim the foregoig I have herennto set my hand this 15th day of March, 1877.
GEORGE M. CHURCH.
