IMPROVEMENT IN COAL-BOXES.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 193,336, dated July 1877; application filed February 5, 1,877.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, CHRisToPHER HYMnRs, of St. Louis, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented an Improved Coal-Box, of which the following is a specilication y This invention is la coal-box more specially adapted for household purposes, to facilitate the storing, handling, and use of coal or fuel.
The nature of my invention consists in the peculiar construction of the parts and their combination to achieve the advantages, all of which willhereinafter more fully appear.
Of the drawing, Figure l is a perspective view of my cabinet, the parts broken away vbeing to show the interior construction. Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation of my cabinet. Fig. 3 is a detail section on line an of Fig. 2.
A represents the housing. B is a door hinged to the housing at top, for entering the fuel in the box or cabinet. B is the front door, to control the discharge or outlet. U is the feed-hopper, dividing the fuel-chamber D from the discharge-chamber E. (See Figs. 1
' and 2.) The feed-hopper consists oi' the side pieces co1 and the bottom piece c2. c3 are the supports, fastened to the opposite sides of the cabinet, to retain the side pieces in po sition. For this purpose the supports c3 have a mortise at c4, (see Fig. 3,) in which the lower corners of the side pieces simply rest, their upper edges resting against the sides of the housing. The side pieces c c1 therefore assume an inclined position, are easily removed and replaced, and require no permanent fastening. Further, I provide in each of the side pieces an inclined groove, c5. (See Figs. 2,
l3.) The bottom piece c2 is shaped to suit the grooves c5, and rest in same, while its upper edge rests against the housing, and thus said bottom piece is also supported in an inclined position, and in 'like detachable manner.
This construction ofthe parts composing the feed-hopper O has the following advantages: The weight of the coal, &c., bears upon said hopper parts and tends to wedge same the more tightly in the grooves and mortises. The inclined position of the hopper parts facilitates the dropping of the coal. The hopper parts, more especially, being detachable, can be placed upright against the interior of the housing, or entirely removed out of same, leaving the chambers D and E serviceable for other packing purposes.
c6. is the feed-opening. F is a grate bottom, also removable, as it simply rests upon the supports f, which are secured to the opposite sides of the cabinet. (See Fig. l.)
When used the bottom F forms the bottom proper for the chamber E. The coal, &c., drop through the feed-opening c6 upon the grate bottom F. The door B is opened and the operator shovels the coal from ofIn the bottom F for use. The siftings from the coal drop through the grate, and can be collected in a drawer, G, at the bottom. (See Figs. 1 and 2.)
In case lump coal is used, the grate-bottom F can be interchanged with the solid bottom g (see Figs. 1 and 2) of the drawer.
To accomplish the interchange of F and g the opposite sides of the drawer has mortises (see g', Fig. 2) which extend the whole length of the sides.
The solid bottom gis made to suit the dimensions of the drawer, and so as to readily slide in and out of its grooves g. Likewise the grate bottom F is fitted to slide in and out of said grooves. This interchange of the bottoms F and g is to accommodate the kind of coal used, and to obviate the annoyances arising from the dust and siftings from the coal.
1. The feed-hopper C, consisting of the side pieces c c1, having grooves c5, the bottom piece c2, the supports c3, having mortises c, in combination with a cabinet, A. as and for the puprposes set forth.
2. The grate-bottom F, the supports f, in combination with the feed-hopper O, and cabinet A, having the drawer G, as and for the purposes set forth.
3. The feed-hopper G, consisting of the side pieces c c1, having inclined grooves c5, the bottom pieces c2, the supports c3, having mortises c4, the grate bottom F, the drawer Gr,
having removable bottom g, all said parts in combination with a cabinet, A, as and for the purposes set forth.
