Description
A. STAUTZ. Wood and Goal Boxes.
No. 196,052. Patented Oct. 9, 1877.
INVENTOR I"'IIIIIII"I I WITNESSES NJEIERS, FHOTD-LITHOGRAPHER. WASHINGTON, D C.
UNITED STATES PATENT FFICE.
ARTHUR STAUTZ, OF'NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN WOOD AND COAL BOXES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 196,052, dated October 9, 1877; application filed September 1, 1877.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR STAUTZ, of the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and .useful Improvements in Wood and Goal Boxes; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will en able others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompany-- ing drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to combined coal and wood boxes for stores, offices, private rooms, and the like, and has for its object the convenient handling of coal and wood with entire cleanliness.
It consists of an upright box or case provided with a tight lid or top, and so arranged in the interior, by partitions or chutes, that the entire amount of coal contained in the box tends always toward a pit in the lower corner, the partitions formingat the same time a separate compartment for wood.
Figure 1 is a front elevation. Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section, showing the interior as seen from the back of the box.
In the drawings, a shows the lid or top of my box; I), the door of the wood-compartment; c, the lip to the opening of the coal-pit. d is the shovel, and e the catch by which the shovel is held in position when used to close the opening of the coal-pit.
The interior arrangement is shown in Fig. 2. The coal-compartment f is formed by the obtuse-angular partition or chute g, by means of which the coal is thrown toward the lower corner or pit. This partition also forms the roof and side of the wood-compartment h.
()n the inner side of the outer wall of the pit Iprovide a shoulder, i, which serves to strengthen and contract the mouth m or pit, and acts also as a chute. The coal is thrown toward the rear of the pit by means of the check is, attached to the interior above the opening, and is thus prevented from falling out of the mouth. The shovel d is made to fit the opening and the bottom of the pit. It has a flat bottom and vertical sides, so that it may be readily inserted under the coal in the pit to the extreme rear of the box, and no more coal than it can hold will be withdrawn. The lip c is slightly inclined upward, and no coal will fall upon the floor or carpet.
The shovel is designed to be used as a door to close the opening of the pit. The woodcompartment is closed by a door, also, on the front of the box.
This box maybe made of sheet-iron or other metal, or even of wood, and can be ornamented at will, making a neat as well as useful article of householdfurniture. An ordinary sizeten inches wide, twenty two inches long, and twenty-four inches high will hold one bushel of coal and a half bushel of kindling-wood. It may be made large enough to hold a ton of coal and a correspondin quantity of wood, and of shape to fit a chimney-recess, or in any other form desired.
By means of a slot in the handle of the shovel and a staple in the front of the box, a lock may be attached, as shown at l.
I claim as of my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- 1. In a wood and coal box, the combination of the obtuse-angular transverse partition, separating the wood and coal compartments, with the shoulder i, together forming the contracted coal-pit, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a wood and coal box, the combination of the check 70 with the shoulderi and front opening on and lip c, as and for the purposes specified.
3. The combination of the lip c, catch 0, and shovel d, when used as a door to close the opening m of a wood and coal box, substantially as shown and described.
4. As anew article of manufacture, the herein described wood and coal box, having the openings in front, the wood-co1npart1nent being closed by a door, and the coal-compartment by the shovel and catch, as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ARTHUR STAUTZ. l/Vitnesses:
JOHN H. BRUNJEs, WILLIAM M00. BURKE.
