GROCERY SHOW-CASE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 558,158, dated Apri1 14, 1896.

Application filed ober 1, 1395- To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ANDREW J. CHASE, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Grocery Show-Cases, of which the following is a specification.

The objects of my invention are to provide show-cases having a series of glass-covered compartments or glass-front bins, so as to expose the groceries placed therein to view in an attractive and convenient form or manner and also preserve and protect the same from injury by dust, dirt, and flies, and by means of curved metal bottoms prevent the ravages of rats and mice therein and permit such groceries to be removed therefrom in a more convenient and desirable manner; and it consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the several parts of the show-case,ashereinaftermore fullydescribed, and specifically set forth in the claim.

To the drawings hereto annexed,which form a part of this specification, reference is made.

Figure 1 represents an end elevation showing a grocery show-case constructed according to my invention, as shown by the dotted lines. Fig. 2 represents a similar view of the same with the upper portion extended vertically. Fig.3 represents a vertical section through a grocery show-case constructed to embody my invention. Fig. 4 represents a front elevation of the same.

It will be seen and understood that my showcases are designed to stand upon the floor of a store, and are especially adapted for exhibiting a very large class of groceries in a more convenient and desirable manner than heretofore employed and permit of a more rapid and easy access thereto, and by which such goods are more thoroughly protected from dust or dirt and vermin or insects than by the more common method heretofore, wherein such groceries are kept stored in open boxes and barrels and exposed to view in an undesirable manner, as to cleanliness and sale, in an expeditious manner, as may be advantageous.

A represents the main body or outside case, formed of paneled woodwork, as desired, it being more or less ornamental and conforming to the design made essential by my invention.

B represents asheet-metal curved bottom Serial No. 564,311. (No modell) secured permanently in position at the front and rear or opposite sides of the main case A and extending throughout the length of the same, or from end to end, as may be desirable, being shown in cross-section in Fig. 3 and by dotted lines in Fig. 1. This segmental or curved sheet-metal bottom portion B is partially inclosed by a series of sliding curved glass covers E, which may be slid backward and upward to permit of easy access to such groceries as may be placed in suitable compartments formed therein, as is indicated in Fig. 4. Now, in order to extend similar compartments, I provide an elevated series of smaller size, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, wherein it will be seen that the curved sheetmetal bottom portion P does not curve upward at the front side; but this front portion is substituted by a vertical glass front F, rigidly secured in position, which permits the groceries contained in these compartments to be exposed clearly to view, as such compartments are provided with sliding curved glass covers L, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, which may be slid upward and backward, so as to permit the groceries contained in the series of compartments to be removed therefrom in an easy, convenient, and expeditious manner. It will be observed that the said segmental or curved sheet-metal bottom portions enable groceries contained in such compartments to be removed therefrom by means of the common scoop with great ease and facility. Such bottom being hard and smooth or an even surface, the point end of the scoop will not catch thereon, as liable where the bottoms are formed of strips or pieces of wood joined together as usual.

Iam well aware of the patent to Malzen, No. 469,422, February 23, 1892, and the patent to Volkland, No. 166,043, July 27, 1875, for grocers cabinets; also the British patent to Parnell, No. 3,738, February 22, 1884, for shelving. Therefore I broadly disclaim the inventions shown and described in the said patents, as they do not meet the requirements of my said invention, which is diiferently combined, constructed, and arranged, and has several essential and important elements designed for a more efficient display of the contents of the compartments, as above described and shown.
