COAL-RECEPTACLE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 346,676, dated August 3, 1886.

Be it known that I, HENRY NIEHOFF, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Coal-Receptacle, of'which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

This inventionis the construction of an improved form of coal-receptacle, the object of the invention being to provide a receptacle which will effectually prevent the escape of dust into the room or apartment within which the receptacle is located, and which will permit of the withdrawal of the coal by means of a shovel, the receptacle being so arranged that only a portion of the lower compartment from which the coal is taken for use is filled at any one time.

To the ends named theinvention consists of a receptacle provided with a curved bottom and a partial interior partition, whereby the receptacle is divided into two compartments, a stop or bolstering plate being arranged below the partition for a purpose to be hereinafter described; and the invention further consists of the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.

Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings,formingapart of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.

Figure 1 is a front view of my improved coal-receptacle. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional elevation of the same, taken on linear x of Fig.

1, the extensible portion being, however, shown in its extended position; and Fig. 3 is asectional plan view taken on line yy of Fig.2.

In the drawings above referred to, A represents the main box or body of my improved form of coal receptacle, which is, as illustrated, preferably in the form of a cylinder; but the body A could be square, oblong, or any other shape desired without departing from the spirit of myinvention. This box or body A is mounted in any manner desired upon an ornamental base, B, and its bottom ais curved downward from the forward side of the receptacle, and then upward to meet the rear wall of said receptacle. At a pointjust upon a level with the forward edge of the bottom a there is a door, 0, provided with an appropriate catch and mounted by means of an ordinary form of hinge, as b. Just above the opening that is closed by the door 0 there is arranged a rearwardly-inelined partition, D, preferably made of sheet metal so out as to be provided With ears 0 c, and then bent to the form indicated in the drawings, the said partition being held in position by means of rivets d, which are passed through aperturesformed in the walls ofthe main body A, and through other apertures formed in the lugs or ears 0.

It will be noticed that the partition D does not extend entirely across the box A, but that there is an opening, E, between the lower edge of the partition and the rear wall of the receptacle; but this opening is partially closed by a stop or deflecting-plate, F, arranged below the partition D, and secured and held in place by means of lugs or earsf and rivets g, as indicated. An extensible section, H, is fitted within the main receptacle A, and held in any position desired by means of a set-screw, h, which enters a groove, '6, formed in the outer face of the extensible section, but not running entirely to the bottom of said section, so that when the section is raised the set-screwh will prevent its withdrawal from the main body A.

The upper end of A is formed with an outwardly and then inwardly curved'beadflc, the edge Z of which fits close against the outer face of the extensible section; but when the extensible section is lowered to the position shown in Fig. 1, the bead 7c is partially covered by an ogee or other form of molding, I, that is carried by the extensible section. The device described is provided with a cover, N.

In operation, if it is desired to place a large amount of coal in the receptacle the section II is drawn oiit to the position shown in Fig. 2, in which position it is held by the set-screw h. The coal is then filled in,and,striking upon the partition D,will fall against the deflecting-plate F and will be thrown upon the curved bottom a; but owing to the position of the plateF the coal will not extend farther forward than the point 8. (Shown in Fig. 2.) In removing the coal the curved bottom a permits of the use of any ordinary form of shovel that will enter the door 0, and I find that by imparting such a curve as is represented in the drawings to the said bottom a the filling of the shovel is greatly facilitated. As the coal is withdrawn from the receptacle the section H may be lowered to the position shown in Fig. 1.

In practice I prefer to make my receptacle of a size adapted to hold two scuttles of coal when the parts are adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 1,0r to hold three scuttles when the parts are adjusted to the position shown in Fig. 2. l

Having thus fully described my invention,

what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. The combination,with the main body A, having a door, 0, and a bottom, a, curved as shown, of the downward-inclinedpartition D, secured to the inner side of the body over the door. an opening, E, being formed opposite the door, and the inward and downward inclined plate F, secured to the body below the opening, substantially as set forth.

2. The combination, with the outer tubular body, A, having closed sides and bottom, and a set-screw, h, near its upper end,of the inner tubular section, H, open at its top and bottom, closed at its sides,and provided with a vertical groove receiving the inner end of the set-screw h, and a cover for the inner section, substantially as set forth.
