Description
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOI-IN E. THOMAS, OF BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
SCOT-COLLECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 467,527, dated January 26, 1892. Application filed .I une 4, 1891. Serial No. 395,037. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN E. THOMAS, of Bloomington, in the county' of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Soot-Collectors;V
and I do hereby declare the following` to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the Same.
My invention relates to metallic devices adapted to be fitted into a chimney at the throat of the iiue; and its object is to furnish a means to collect the soot and prevent its falling into the grate and upon the floor of the room during the summer season or when the grat-e is unused.
A further object is to dispense with the summer practice of stuffing a bag or other obstruction up the iue in order to retain the soot.
These objects I attain in the manner of construction and combination of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and as set forth in the specification and claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a View of the device in perspective, as seen from the rear and the under or outer bottom side. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of the device, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the same. Y
Like letters refer to like parts in the respective views.
The device has the form of an elongated metal frame or box provided with aremovable bottom, as shown at D, on the under-side, and a I'iange d, extending along the front side at the base to support the arch over the grateopening and also extending on each of the ends of the metal frame at the base, in order to support the frame in the brick-work of the chimney-Hue. The front side of the frame 0r box A and the short ends B are vertical,
while the rear side is shaped with an angleshaped piece O. The removable or portable bottom D seen from the under side is `t-ted to rest at the base of the upper angle-shaped piece or back O, on cleats orcross-pieces along the short ends of the frame, as at d, as seen from the under side. The under rear piece of the device is of peculiar construction, the outer side E of which is formed at the same angle as the upper rear side O, making asharp angle at their conjunction, and thereby forming an inner face, heat-deflection and draftascension plate or piece, as at F, at the top of the grate, (F marking the inner face of piece E.) The back of the grate is built to the lower edge of the plate or piece F.
In placing the frame into the chimney the inside face of the luc will bear against and above the rear piece C, the device being set in the throat of the flue. A handle e may be provided on the bottom to facilitate its removal.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v In a soot-collector for use in the flue of a fire-grate, a metallic frame or box of elongated form having a Hange extending along its base on the front and on the ends and its rear side composed of angle-shaped pieces, said frame being provided with a removable or portable bot-tom resting on cleats or cross-pieces as a stop, substantially as described, and for the purposes specified.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN E. THOMAS. Witnesses:
JOHN A. FULWILER, Y S. R. GRIFFITH.
