DUST COLLECTOR:
(Application filed Feb. 4, 1899. Renewed Ian. 18, 1900.)

V UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
LOBE IVALDER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
DUST=COLLECTOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 655,384, dated August *7, 1900. Application filed February 4, 1899. Renewed January 18, 1900. Serial No. 1,922. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LOBE WVALDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Dust-Collectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates particularly to an improvement in dust-collecting devices adapted to be moved about on a floor or carpet to receive and retain the dust as it is collected by a broom in sweeping.
My object is to provide a collector which will readily admit the dust thereinto, but will prevent its escape therefrom, the device being at the same time simple of structure and cheap of manufacture.
In the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my improved form of dust-collector, Figure 1 is a view in front perspective of the device, and Fig. 2, a top plan section taken as indicated at line 2 of Fig. 1.
The device, which is constructed preferably of tin-plate, comprises a substantially-flat square base-plate A, vertical side pieces A A a curved top and rear end piece A sloping rearwardly and downwardly from the front upper angle a of the side pieces to the rear end of the base-plate, and a front piece A, which slopes slightly forward from the angles a. The front piece is provided with a symmetrically-placed trapezoidal opening having upwardly-convergent sides of equal slope. Otherwise described, the front piece comprises strips Z), (constituting inturned flanges at the front edges of the side pieces,) flanking the opening and gradually widening toward the top, and a connecting-piece b'(constituting a downward depending flange) at the front edge of the top piece A At the front margin of the top piece in front of the center of gravity is provided the usual handle 0, and at the rear end of the device and above the plane of the bottoin is provided a ring at for hanging the collector up when not in use.
As shown in Fig. 1, the bottom is caused to curve down slightly near its front margin, so that it rests on a line bearing at this portion, thus insuring close contact of the front edge withthe floor or carpet.
In a collector having a base about thirteen inches square and a greatest height of about eight and a half inches the opening in the front piece is preferably ten inches wide at the bottom and five inches wide at the top,- the flange 6 being from one to two inches in W'ldthl.
The method of use is to move the collector transversely of the direction of sweeping, its weight being so slight that this movement can readily be effected by shoving with the broom or With a foot. The broom as it enters the pan in sweeping displaces the air centrally and causes air-currents to pass forward and upwardly along the sides, where they impinge with more or less force on the flanges b, which thus serve to prevent the escape of dust. It will be observed that my improved construction permits a free use of the broom in sweeping the dust into the collector, but guards against the return currents carrying it out again.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A dust-collector, comprising a substantially-flat bottom, side pieces, a top and rear inclosing plate, strips widening from lower end to upper end flanking the front opening and affording inturned flanges at the front edges of the side pieces, and a handle at the top in front of the center of gravity, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. A dust-collector, comprising a substantially-flat bottom, side, top and rear inclosing plates, and a front piece provided with a trapezoidal opening having upwardly-convergent sides or edges of equal slope, said front piece aifording inturned flanges laterally of the opening and a depending flange above the opening, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. A dust-collector, comprising a substantially-flat base-plate A, vertical side pieces A A having front upper angles a, a curved rearwardly and downwardly sloping cover A affording a top and rear end, a plane sloping front piece A provided with a symmetricallyplaced trapezoidal opening, and a handle 0 on the top and in front of the center of gravity, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
LOBE WALDER.
In presence of- D. WV. LEE, R. I. SPENCER.
