UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
THOMAS H. PARIS, OF MONON, INDIANA.
CARPET-SWEEPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 541,495, dated June 25, 1895. A Application fil ed March 12, 1895. Serial No. 541,407- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS H. PARIS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Monon, in the county of White and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dust-Gatherers; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in. the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has relation to devices or machines for sweeping dust, dirt, litter, 850., from the surface of floors, carpets, &c., and the object of my invention, among others, is to provide a machine of the described character which is of simple and inexpensive construction and efficient in operation, and my invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the drawings and pointed out in the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my improved sweeping-machine. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a front viewwith the roller or brush removed, showing the construction and arrangement of the cleaning-plate. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view illustrating the means of adjusting the brush-shaft.
In carrying out my-invention, I provide a casing 1, forming a receptacle for the dirt, litter, &c., gathered by the device. This casing is left partly open upon one side as at 2, through which to remove the contents of the casing, and the latter isprovided with the forwardly extending rectangular portion 3 open at its front and under side, and within which portion 3 is located the cylindricalor annular brush 4, the shaft 5 of which is journaled in the sides 6 of the casing and preferably in an adjustable manner, as by means of vertically adjustable bearings '7 so that the shaft and with it the brush may be adjusted vertically to cause the periphery of the brush to project more or less beyond the lower edge of the portion 3 of the casing,
8 are Wheels mounted rigidly upon the shaft and serve to rotate the latter and brush when the machine is moved across the floor.
9 indicates a plate arranged transversely within the casing and having notches to form a serrated or toothed edge, which when the brush rotates, serves 'to clean the latter of dirt, rubbish, &c., and cause the latter to be deposited within the casing.
10 indicates an arm which is secured at the ends to the sides of the casing and projects forwardly and across the brush adjacent thereto, the purpose of which arm is to prevent heavy rubbish from gaining access to the brush and thereby clogging up the device and preventing its easy operation.
A suitable handle 11 is attached to the device for moving the same across the surface to be cleaned.
In operation when the machine is pushed across the floor, carpet, &c., the rotation of the brush causes the dirt or rubbish to be gathered by the brush and swept into the interior of the casing whence it may he removed at intervals through the opening 2. Y
My device may be made of various sizes as desired.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with the casing 1, open at its front and under side, of the shaft having its ends mounted in bearings adapted for vertical adjustment in the casing, the brush mounted on the shaft, wheels mounted upon the shaft at opposite ends, the plate 9 arranged within the casing and secured to the upper side thereof and extending downwardly into contact with the brush and having its lower edge serrated, and an arm 10 secured at the ends to the sides of the casing and projecting forwardly and across the brush adjacent thereto. 7
' In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
THOMAS H. PARIS. Witnesses:
H. B. TULL, M. O. PHILLIPS.
