COMBINATION BROOM AND SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 22, 1910.
Application filed December 28, 1908. Serial No. 489,533.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB S. BENDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combination Brooms and Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a combination broom and scraper, and my object is to provide a simple and inexpensive device of this character which is particularly adapted to cleaning streets.
-A further object is to combine the broom and scraper'in such a manner that they will cooperate in preventing dust and paper, being gathered thereby, from blowing upwardly from the scraper or the broom.
Other objects of the invention will hereinafter appear and in order that it may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 represents a side view of the device with the broom occupying an operative position. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device with the scraper in its operative position. Fig. 3 is an enlarged, detail, perspective view of the device, with its handle removed. In carrying out the invention, I employ a broom provided with a rectangular back portion 1, and bristles 2 projecting from the underside of said back. Back 1 is reinforced by a scraper made preferably of sheet-metal, and comprising a back portion 3 engaging the back portion 1 of the broom, side portions 4: integral with back portion 3 andengaging the sides of back 1, and oppositely-extending wings 5, integral with the lower portion of sides 4, and having downwardly curved terminals 6, either of which is adapted to engage the surface of the street when the broom is held in a horizontal tend outwardly in a horizontal plane from 1 sides 4 and their ends are bent downward l to a vertical position parallel to sides -'l,E so that when either scraper is in operation the bristles of the broom will PIOJGCt forward in a horizontal plane, as shown in Fig. 2.
Back 1 of the broom has two oppositelydiverging sockets 7 for the reception of a handle 8, whereby the device may be operated, the scraper back 3 having openings 9 which register with sockets 7 for the pas-' sage of the lower end of handle 8, hence when the terminal of one of the wings wears oit', from contact with the surface of the street, the device may be reversed to bring the terminal of the other wing in operation.
The scraper portion of the device not only reinforces the broom back 1, but it also prevents dust being gathered by the broom from blowing upward. Likewise, when the scraper is in operation, as shown in Fig. '2, the bristles of the broom projecting forwardly over the lower wing 4t, cooperates with the same by preventing dust and paper from blowing upwardly therefrom.
By combining a broom and scraper in the manner above described, it is obvious that great efliciency as well as a saving of time is effected in cleaning streets, and by making the device reversible,.its life, of course, is greatly prolonged.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A device of the character described, consisting of a broom having a rectangular back provided with diverging sockets. a
handle-adapted to be inserted into either broom, for the purpose set forth and described.
In testimony whereof I aflix my sgnature, 1n the presence of two witnesses.
JACOB s. BENDER.
