FLUE-CLEANER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 3, 1908.
Application filed October 6. 1906. Serial No. 337.723.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY O. BARRELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Flue-Cleaners, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation to flue cleaners and it consists in the construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim- In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the handle of the flue cleaner. Fig. 2 is a side view of the brush. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the flue cleaner having the brush shown in Fig. 2 attached to the handle.
Referring to the accompanying drawing the numeral 1 designates a single rod which comprises an operating handle, said rod has formed on its upper end horizontal branches 8, having their ends bent to provide upwardly extending vertical arms 2, the terminals of which are bent inwardly to form hooks 3. The opposite end of the handle 1 is provided with a scraper 4. The numeral 4 designates the brush, the backing 5 of which is provided with a continuous central surrounding groove 6 and oppositely disposed perforations are formed in the groove near the upper ends of the back, which serve to permit of the hooks being sprung therein, so that the branches 8, and vertical arms 2 will be inclosed and wholly secured within said groove. After the flue has been scraped by means of the scraper 4 the handle is reversed and the brush inserted in the flue for cleaning the same. Whenever the brush is worn out or injured a new brush can be readily attached; or whenever a round flue is to be cleaned a properly shaped brush may be attached to the handle.
From the foregoing it will be obvious that a tool made in accordance with my invention is simple in construction; can be used in brushes of various contours; the brush may be readily removed and replaced-by another; and the tool may be used for both scraping and brushing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
A flue cleaner comprising a straight rod having formed on its upper end horizontal branches having their ends bent to provide upwardly extending vertical arms, the terminals of which are bent inwardly to form hooks, a brush back having a continuous surrounding central groove therein, and bristles on opposite sides faces of the back, said groove being provided with oppositely disposed openings therein arranged near the upper end of the back, and said hooks serving to be sprung into said openings to permit of the branches and the vertical arms being inclosed and secured within said groove, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
HENRY BARRELL.
