MATTHIAS E. FEATHERSTONE, OF ST. ELMO, ILLINOIS.
BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 18, 1908.
Application filed April 14. 1906. Serial No. 3113730.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATTHIAS E. FEATHER- STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Elmo, in the county of Fayette and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to brushes and has for its object to produce an article of the class referred to which is designed especially for cleaning cuspidors, the construction of the handle and shank of the brush and the arrangement of the bristles of the brush adapting the cuspidor to be cleaned both inside and outside in an expeditious and thorough manner.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated and particularly pointed out in the claim. V
The accompanying drawing represents a perspective view of a brush constructed in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawings, 1 desi 'nates the handle of the brush having a shan or stock portionZ along one side of which are arranged bristles 3. At its extremity, the shank 2 is provided with an integral right angular extension 4 which projects vertically upward therefrom and the bristles 3 are continued from the side of the shank 2 around the outer side of the vertical extension 4 and on around the rounded extremity 5 of the vertical extension and partially along the inner side of said vertical extension, as clearly shown in the drawings. The bowed end of the handle 1 is preferably sharpened or brought to a rounded point or extremity 5, thereby forming a pointed scraper or gouge by which closely adhering particles may be forcibly removed from the cuspidor.
opening in the top of the cuspidor and manipulated in a circular path so as to cause the bristles to move in contact with the upper wall of the cuspidor and also the bottom and side walls thereof. In this way, every point of the interior of the cuspidor may be reached by the bristles, thereby enabling the cuspidor to be thoroughly cleaned and scoured.
I claim:
A brush for the purpose described comprising a handle with. an elongated integral right angular extension projecting from one end of the handle and rounded on its under surface at its intersection with the handle, said extension being also rounded at its terminal, bristles secured part way to the upper surface of the extension and to its terminal and to its intersecting rounded portion and also part way on the side of said handle, said extension being of a suflicient length which serves when inserted through the opening of a cuspidor to permit of the bristles on the intersecting rounded portion and those on the outer vertical face to contact with the inner surface of the bottom of the cuspidor, while those that are arranged part way on the inner vertical portion of the extension will contact with the inner surrounding surface of said cuspidor, substantially as specified.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
MATTHIAS E. FEATHERSTONE.
