UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN RINGEN, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
COAL-HOD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 369,962, dated September 13, 1887.
Application filed August 1, 1885. Serial No. 173,298.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN RINGEN, of the city of St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Coal Hods or Scuttles, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing. forming part of this specification, and which is a perspective view of my improved coal hod or bucket.
My invention relates to an improved coal hod or scuttle for use with coal which it is desired to remove by means of a shovel; and my invention consists in features of novelty, hereinafter fully described, and pointed out in the claim.
Referring to the drawing, A represents the square body of a combined sheet-metal and wood coal hod or scuttle, having a flat back, B, flat sides O,with inclined front ends, D, and bottom formed with a downturned flange, E, at the front edge. The flat bottom is made of sheet metal and lined with a wooden plate, E, for strengthening and supporting the bottom. The bottom is secured to the plate by means of fastenings E and E through the flange and bottom, respectively. Secured to the bottom is a wooden block or foot, F, held in place by the inturned lower ends, G, of ears G, that extend from above the sides, and are secured to the body and bottom plate by fastenings O, as shown, and the foot may be addi- (ModeL) tionally secured to the bottom by screws or nails H, passing through the bottom.
I represents a bail secured to the upper ends of the ears, as shown.
When the hod or scuttle is set down, it assumes the position shown in the drawing, the front end being elevated, so that the coal is not liable to fall out.
This form of hod or scuttle is convenient for receiving coal and for carrying it, and is particularly convenient for the removal of the coal from it by means of a shovel. I prefer to form a bead on the outer edge of the body, in which is held a wire, J, as shown. though this is not absolutely necessary.
I claim as my invention A coal hod or scuttle comprising a square body, A, consisting of a metal back, B, metal sides 0, having inclined front ends, D, the metal bottom E, having flange E at the front edge, and the wooden plate E, secured to the bottom and to the flange, the Wooden block F forming a foot secured to the bottom, the ears G, extending from above the sides downward to the foot, having inturned ends G, secured beneath the latter, and a bail, I, substantially as described.
JOHN RINGEN.
