UNITED Y STATES PATIENT, OFFICEo e. ELY, OF
FIRE-PLACE BLOWER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 363,997, dated May 31, 1887.
Application filed April 27,1886. Serial No. 200,288. (No model.)
, T all whom it may concern:
invention consisting, essentially, of a hood secured to the lower edge of the blower proper and so arranged that while free access is permitted for the purpose of stirring the fire, in order that the ashes may be removed, all of the dust resulting from such stirring will be carried up the chimney by the draft, which draft is not in any way diminished or affected by the appliance which I am about todescribe.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this Specification,
in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figural is a face view of a fire-place pro-- vided with my improved form of blower. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on line a: wet Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged side view of the lower portion of the blower, and Fig. 4 is a side view of a modified construction representing a flat blower constructed in accordance with the terms of my invention.
Referring, now, .to the general construction illustrated in the drawings, 10. represents an ordinary form of open fire-place that is provided with an outwardly-bowed grate, 11.
12 is the main portion or body of the blower, which is provided with the usual form of up--' per strong clip, 13, that is arranged to fit against the inner face of the metallic frame 14, in which the fire-place opening is formed; or, if desired, the upper end of the blower 12 could be made to fit within the frame 14, in which case the spring-clip 13 would be dispensed with. The blower is provided with the usual form of supporting-stops, 15, which rest upon the upper horizontal bar of the grate 11 and support the weight of the blower.
' To the lower edge of the blower proper I secure a hood, 20, which hood constitutes the main feature of my invention, and consists, 5o
bent down over the inwardly-bent ends 5 of the leaf 3. The several parts of the hood may be riveted together, or, if preferred, they may be united in any other of the ways well known to sheet-metal workers.
As shown in the drawings, the leaf 2 is formed with a flange, 6, that is fixed to the main body 12 of the blower by means of a single lock, 7, and this means of attachment I prefer when the device is to be used in connection with such a grate as that shown in the drawings; but when a straight-bar grate is used the hood 2() would be secured directly to the body of the blower.
An inspection of Fig. 2 will show that when the blower is in position there will be ample space beneath the hood to permit of the proper poking of the fire, and from the construction described and shown it will also be seen that the flying ashes caused by the stirring of the fire will be caught by the hood and carried up the flue by the draft, and will not spread about the room.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- Y I 1. As an improved article of manufacture, the fire-place blower consisting of the inclined body portion having at its lower edge a hood with its top inclined outwardly and down wardly and connected to vertical front and side portions, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination, with a blower provided with supporting-hooks 13 and 15, of an outwardly-extending hood secured to the bottom of the blower, said hood consisting of overlapping. portions 2 and 3, that are bent at 4 and 5 to constitute the end, substantially as described.
